국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 ｢에밀｣에 제시된 루소의 자연교육론을 일종의 지식교육론으로 재해석하고 그로부터 교육적 시사를 탐색하는 데에 있다. 그렇게 재해석할 결정적 단서는, ｢에밀｣에 제시된 자연교육의 과정에서 아이의 자연적 발달에 상응하여 ‘아이의 지식’으로 등장하는 것이 어른의 대상지식에서는 억류되어 도외시되곤 하는 ‘자기지식’이라는 점, 아이의 자기지식은 ‘선한 본성’을 발달 원리로 삼아 발달의 조화로운 체계를 드러낸다는 점, 자기지식의 체계적 발달은 목적 면에서 볼 때 ‘인간성’의 구체적인 실현이라는 결실로 이어진다는 점이다. 그리하여 이처럼 자기지식의 발달을 핵심으로 한 ｢에밀｣의 지식교육론은 오늘날 우리로 하여금 특히 아이의 지식교육과 관련하여 순전히 방법 면에서만 부각되었던 ‘아동 존중’이 내용 면과 목적 면에서 무슨 뜻인지, 이 셋의 조화가 어떻게 가능한지를 새삼 되돌아보게 한다.

영문 초록

This study aims to reinterpret Rousseau’s theory of natural education in Emile as a special kind of theory of knowledge education, and thereby provide some educational suggestions. The critical clue to such a reinterpretation is that what emerges as ‘the child’s knowledge’ in natural education is ‘self-knowledge’ that is often arrested and neglected in the adult’s ‘object-knowledge’. However, the child’s pursuit of self-knowledge establishes a harmonious development system by the principle of ‘good nature’ or ‘natural goodness’. The hierarchical development of self-knowledge leads to the fruit of concrete realization of ‘humanity’ in terms of purpose of knowledge education. Thus, the theory of knowledge education in Emile, which has the development of self-knowledge as its core, makes us reflect on what ‘respect for the child’, which has merely been highlighted in terms of method, means in terms of content and purpose, especially in relation to children’s knowledge education. Also, it makes us look back on how the harmony of these three elements is possible.
