국문 초록

‘코로나19 바이러스’가 초래한 상황은 우리 삶 전반에 관한 성찰과 일상의 변화를 요구하고 있지만, 실제 삶의 변화가 자발적으로 진행되기는 쉽지 않다. 그러다보니 새로운 기준을 요구하면서도 현실은 이전의 기준을 고수하는 과정에서 불안과 불만이 커지고, 전반적인 삶의 방향 상실 현상이 나타나고 있기도 하다. 우리 사회의 종교에 대한 전통적인 기대는 이런 상황에서 그 불안감을 해소하면서, 삶의 의미 물음을 제대로 껴안을 수 있는 배경으로 자리해주는 것이다. 실제 우리 종교는 이 기대에 부응하고 있을까? 그리스도교와 함께 우리 시민사회의 대표적인 제도종교로 자리잡은 불교는 외형적으로 비대면 법회 등을 통해 어느 정도 적응하고 있기는 하지만, 적극적인 역할을 하고 있다고 보기는 어렵고 다만 그리스도교와의 대비 속에서 상대적으로 평가를 받고 있는 정도이다. 불교가 보다 적극적인 위상과 역할을 확보하기 위해서는 먼저 ‘코로나19 사태’를 불교적 관점에서 분석하여 공유할 수 있어야 하고, 그 토대 위에서 자비의 윤리를 적극적으로 실천할 수 있어야 한다. 이 사태 속에서 우리는 모든 존재하는 것들이 상호의존의 관계망 속에 있다는 붓다의 진리를 확인하고 있고, 그 인식 위에서 실질적인 자비행(慈悲行)을 통해 자신의 삶을 온전히 하고 어려움에 처한 존재자들을 도울 수 있다. 이렇게 할 수 있기 위해서는 먼저 제도종교로서 우리 불교의 현실을 객관적으로 고찰하면서 승가공동체가 제대로 성립할 수 있도록 해야 하고, 동시에 재가공동체의 확립을 통한 사부대중공동체의 지향이 전제되어야 한다. 그 바탕 위에서 다른 종교와의 공존은 물론 ‘종교적인 것’에 대한 열망을 지닌 일반 시민들과의 공존과 보다 나은 미래를 모색해볼 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

The situation caused by the “Covid-19 virus” calls for reflection and daily changes in our lives as a whole, but it is not easy for real life changes to proceed voluntarily. As a result, while demanding new standards, the reality is that anxiety and discontents are growing in the process of sticking to the previous standards, and the overall loss of direction in life is emerging. The traditional expectation of religion in our society is to relieve the anxiety in this situation, while properly embracing the question of meaning of life. Is our religion actually living up to this expectation? Although Buddhism, which has become a representative institutional religion of Korean civil society along with Christianity, is adapting to some extent through non-face-to-face Buddhist ceremony, it is difficult to say that it is playing an active role, but it is relatively evaluated in comparison with Christianity. In order for Buddhism to secure a more active status and role, it must first be able to analyze and share the “Covid-19 situation” from a Buddhist perspective, and actively practice the ethics of mercy on its foundations. In this situation we are confirming the truth of Buddha that all existing things are in a network of interdependence, and above that recognition we can make our lives intact and help those in need through practical mercy. In order to do so, we must first objectively consider the reality of our Buddhism as a institutional religion and at the same time make sure that the Buddhist Priesthood Community (僧伽) is properly established, and at the same time, the direction of the community among the four units through the establishment of a community of reconsideration should be premised. On that basis, we will be able to seek coexistence and a better future with ordinary citizens who have a desire for “religious things” as well as coexistence with other religions.
