한국사원의 귀면장식과 김제 금산사 출토 「王」자명 귀면기와

국문 초록

한국사원의 귀면장식은 불전의 내부와 외부, 기타 귀면으로 분류하였는데 대부분 조선후기의 작례를 나타냈다. 김제 금산사에서 출토한 「왕」자명귀면기와를 계기로, 귀면기와의 사용처와 특성에 대하여 살폈는데, 귀면이 새겨진 기와의 종류가 수막새와 암막새, 부연기와와 사래기와, 마루끝기와와 망와, 치미와 보탑장식 등 매우 다양하였다. 금산사의 봉천원구 발굴조사에서 출토한 「왕」자명귀면기와는 고려시대의 수막새이다. 그런데 경주 안압지와 월성에서 출토한 통일신라의 사래기와와 중국 법문사에서 출토한 당의 금은다구, 강화 전등사와 순천 정혜사의 대웅전의 불단, 양산 통도사의 세존비 등에 새겨진 조선시대의 「왕」자명귀면자료를 통하여 「왕」자가 잡귀와 사귀를 막는 벽사의 최고 지위와 으뜸을 의미한 것으로 파악되었다. 귀면은 무서운 귀신의 얼굴로 사귀와 잡귀를 막는 벽사적인 기능을 한다. 귀면은 몸체를 생략한 정면관 위주로, 두 눈과 입을 특히 강조하며, 사람이 무서운 귀신을 이용하여 요사한 사귀를 막아내는 벽사가 가장 주요한 특성이 되었다. 그런데 입에 물고기를 문 귀면은 조선후기에 상당히 성행하였는데, 화마를 막기 위한 특수한 의장으로 주목된다. 그리고 귀면과 귀와는 일본말이 아니라, 『고려사절요』와 『해동잡록』, 『박씨전』 등 우리나라의 여러 문헌에 기록되었거나 《수궁가》와 《회심곡》 등의 여러 가사에 나왔던 순수한 우리말이다. 따라서 귀면을 수면이나 도깨비, 신조어인 용면이나 귀룡으로 부르는 것은 부적합하며 잘못되었다.

영문 초록

Usually Monster face ornamentations in Korea Buddhist temple were divided into three categories such as exterior tile, interior tile and the rest which are mostly examples of Late Joseon Dynasty. After specified shape coding of ‘Wang’(王 : King) inscribed monster face tiles discovered in geumsansa temple, characteristics and various types of monster decoration tile have been brought into light thorugh in this study. Discovered ‘Wang’(王 : King) inscribed monster face tile in Bongchunwongu site of geumsansa temple is convex roof tile of Goryeo Dynasty. Through ‘Wang’(王 : King) inscribed monster face motifs like square rafter tiles discovered in Anapji pond, tiles of Wolseong castle of Gyeongju and Tang Dynasty silver and gold tea set from Famensi temple of China. Also this motif was discovered at the main Budhha altars of Jeondeungsa Temple in Gangwha, main hall of Jeonghyesa temple in Suncheon and Buddha’s stele of Tongdosa temple in Yangsan Main function of these tile motif is fabulous role to scare away evil forces. Fanciful Monster face has fabulous role to protect from evil forces. Simply docoration with chimerical frontal face stressed with big eyes and mouth, real reasons to crerate this monster face was to protect and to scare away evil forces. A motif of fish in monster mouth which is very unique and popular in Late Choseon Dynasty was prevent from fire disaster. Monster face and Monster tile is Korean traditional term not as Japanese term which are mostly recognized. Many historical records prove this. I also suggest that the terms of Beast face, Dragon face, Monster dragon instead of Monster Face must be deserve little consideration.
