서산대사의 승군활동과 조선후기 추념사업

국문 초록

본고는 조선중기 암울했던 불교를 중흥한 서산대사 청허당 휴정의 위상을 재정립하고 나아가 국가적 추념이 이루어져야 한다고는 것이 그 연구목적이다. 서산대사는 그 이후 오늘날 까지 한국불교의 승려는 모두 그의 문도라고 할 만큼 그의 비중은 매우 크다. 그는 숭유억불시기 불교가 탄압을 받아 종단조차 없어져 승려는 산중으로 가야만 했고 심지어는 역모를 하였다고 모함을 받아 구금이 되었다가 풀려나기도 하였다. 마침 일본이 일으킨 임진란으로 선조는 한양을 버리고 반도의 북쪽 의주로 피난을 가야하는 국가가 존망의 위기에 처했을 때 나이 73세의 노구의 몸을 이끌고 전국의 승도에게 격문을 돌려 승병을 일으킨 구국의 승장이었다. 불살생계를 지켜야 하는 승려였음에도, 그리고 불교가 국가의 탄압을 받았음에도 국가의 위기를 구하고자 하였던 것은 애국적 숭고한 행위였다. 그럼에도 그에 대한 추념은 영조와 정조대 그가 머물렀던 묘향산과 그의 대표적인 제자 사명의 출생지인 밀양, 그리고 반도남쪽의 그의 뜻을 받들어 조선후기 불교의 중심지가 되었던 대흥사 등 몇 건 외에는 그에 대한 추념사업은 찾기 힘들고 그러한 사실조차 잊혀지고 있는 실정이다. 본고는 이러한 그의 국가를 위한 애국정신을 되짚어보고 그를 추념하면서 오늘날 너와 나, 우리의 공동체사회에서 그의 지고한 정신과 행위를 재음미하여야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study aims to reestablish the national respect and social status of a great monk, Seosan-daesa, Cheongheodang-Hyujeong who restored dismal status of Buddhism in the mid-Joseon Dynasty. The great monk, Seosan has had a great influence on Korean Buddhism enough to consider that almost all Buddhist monks in Korea are included among his disciples. In an era in which Confucianism was respected and Buddhism was suppressed, the Buddhist orders were dismissed and monks were forced to move into the mountains. Even Cheongheodang-Hyujeong was imprisoned for false accusation of treason, although released. When the Japanese Invasion threatened Korea's existence and King Seonjo was forced to evacuate Hanyang (the current Seoul) and flee to Euiju in the northern part of Korea, the 73 year old great monk was the commander-in-chief of an army that he raised, with a written appeal to monks, to save the nation. He did this patriotic and noble deed for the country despite the fact that he had been persecuted by the government and as a monk should observe the commandment of ahimsa (no destruction of life). Nevertheless, tributes to him remain in only three places: Myohyang Mountain where the great monk stayed in the era of King Youngjo and King Jeongjo; Milyang, the birthplace of his representative disciple, Samyoung; and Daeheung Temple in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula that became a center of Buddhism in the late-Joseon Dynasty. Other memorial projects for him are scarcely found and even their existence has been forgotten. This study aims to resurrect his will and deeds in our modern community while admiring and honoring him for his patriotic mind.
