국문 초록

본 연구는 ‘교육’과 ‘경쟁’이 본질적으로 지향하는 논리 자체가 다름에도 불구하고 교육의 세계가 경쟁 체제를 대표하는 것으로 인식되고 있는 상황을 바로잡기 위한 이론적 노력의 일환이다. 경쟁은 ‘교육’이 아닌 ‘학교체제’의 문제라는 전제 하에, 먼저 학교가 수행해 온 다중적 기능과의 연관 하에서 경쟁의 작동 맥락을 살펴보고, 경쟁의 프레임으로 보는 세계의 특성, 경쟁의 특성 및 효과에 대한 신화적 믿음, 그리고 그것이 초래한 결과 등을 중심으로 그 영향과 한계를 분석하였다. 논의를 통해 경쟁을 기반으로 작동해 온 학교체제는 여러 측면에서 학생들의 사고와 행동을 지배함으로써 학교에서의 교육적 기능을 억압해 왔음을 논증하였다. 아울러 인간의 전 생애에 편재되어 있는 교육의 세계는 한정된 지위나 재화 등을 두고 다투는 ‘제로섬(zero-sum)’ 게임이 아니라, 서로의 자원과 지평을 넓히는 데 기여하는 협력적인 세계이며, 단선적인 우열관계가 아닌 복선적 교호관계에 기반하고 있다는 점, 그리고 특정한 결과를 얻기 위해 다투는 경쟁의 세계와는 달리 과정 자체가 내재적 가치를 지닌 세계로서, 경쟁이 아닌 협력과 연결 등의 기제를 통해 확장되고 구현될 수 있음을 강조하였다.

영문 초록

This study is a theoretical effort to correct the situation in which education has become an icon of ‘competition’, despite the fact that the logic of an ‘education’ is essentially different from that of ‘competition’. Under the premise that competition is a matter of ‘school system’, not that of an ‘education’, this study examines the operating context of competition in relation to the multiple functions that schools have performed, and the characteristics of the world through a frame of competition and its limitations. Through this discussion, it is argued that the school system, which has been operated based on competition, has suppressed the educational function of the school by controlling the students’ thinking and behavior in various aspects. It is emphasized that the world of education, which is ubiquitous in human life, is not based on a ‘zero-sum’ game in which people fight over the limited status or goods, but a ‘positive-sum’ game that contributes to expanding each other’s resources and horizons, and that it is based on a ‘multiple-line interactive relationships’ rather than ‘single-line superiority and inferiority relationship’, and unlike the world of competition in which people fight to get specific results, the world of education has its intrinsic value which can be expanded and realized through cooperative interaction.
