사회과 성립 배경으로서의 사회적 효율성 탐색

국문 초록

본 연구는 ‘사회과는 어떤 교과인가?’라는 추상적 질문에서 출발하였다. 교과의 성격에 대한 인식은 사회과 교육과정과 교과서, 사회과 수업 등 교육의 구체적인 장면에 끊임없이 작동하기 때문이다. 이에 연구자는 사회적 효율성이라는 개념에 주목하였다. 사회과의 공식적 태동인 1916년 NEA 사회과 보고서에는 사회적 효율성이 사회과 주요한 기조로 작용하였음을 명시하고 있다. 사회적 효율성을 통해서 사회과의 성격이나 본질을 둘러싼 질문, 그리고 그에 파생되는 실제적 고민에 대한 의미 있는 해답을 찾을 수 있다는 것이다. 이러한 가정을 바탕으로 사회적 효율성을 둘러싼 쟁점을 주목해 사회적 효율성의 다면적이고 다층적인 의미를 드러내고자 하였다. 첫째, 사회적 효율성은 개인과 사회의 관계 설정 문제에 관한 해결 방식의 표현이다. 그 속에는 개인의 순응 또는 통제, 사회적 개인으로서 도덕성 계발, 개인과 사회의 균형 또는 조화 등 다양한 관점이 혼재한다. 둘째, 교과의 유용성에 관한 접근 방식이다. 그 속에는 개인의 지성 계발을 위한 자유교육의 유용성에 대한 회의, 미래의 직업 준비 또는 현재에의 필요로 판단되는 교과의 유용성 등 교과 및 교육내용의 가치에 관한 상반된 관점이 있다. 셋째, 과학적 방법에 기초한 교육과정의 구성과 관련된다. 이때 과학은 교육 목적의 달성을 저해하는 낭비 요소의 제거를 위한 근거 또는 학생의 필요에 부응한 교육내용의 선정을 위한 근거로 작용한다. 본 연구는 개인 대 사회, 교육 대 사회화, 학문 대 생활 등 사회과에 유효한 쟁점을 탐색함으로써 사회과의 본질이나 성격을 이해하고, 이를 교육 장면에서 구체화하는 데 필요한 나침반을 제공할 수 있다는 점에서 그 의의가 있다고 판단된다.

영문 초록

The 1916 NEA report on social studies, the official birth of social studies, states that social efficiency acted as the main foundation of the social studies. This shows that social efficiency is a concept that should be understood in discussing the nature or nature of social studies. Based on these assumptions, I tried to reveal meaning of social efficiency by paying attention to the issues surrounding social efficiency. First, social efficiency is an expression of sociologists' solutions to the problem of establishing relationships between individuals and society. Various perspectives are mixed in it, such as regulation or control of an individual, moral development as a social individual, and balance between individuals and society. Second, it is a new way of understanding the usefulness of the subject. There are conflicting views on the value of subjects and educational content, such as the usefulness of subjects for future job preparation or present needs. Third, it is related to the composition of the curriculum based on the scientific method. Third, it is related to the composition of the curriculum based on the scientific method. In this case, science acts as a basis for removing waste factors that hinder the achievement of educational objectives or for selection of educational content that meets the needs of students. This study is meaningful in that it can provide a compass necessary to understand the nature of social studies and to embody it in the educational scene by exploring issues such as individual versus society, education versus socialization, and academic versus life.
