샬롯 메이슨(Charlotte Mason)의 교육방법이 생태유아교육에 주는 의미 고찰

국문 초록

본 연구는 샬롯 메이슨에 대한 이해와 함께 그녀의 교육방법을 살펴보고;생태유아교육에 주는 의미를 고찰하기 위한 목적으로 이루어졌다. 본 연구에서 주목하고 있는 샬롯 메이슨은 19세기 말에서 20세기 초반에 걸쳐 활동한 영국의 교육사상가이자 실천가로;아이들의 본성을 따르는 교육;삶교육;관계교육;의지를 길러주는 교육 등을 강조하였다. 그녀의 교육방법은;자연체험활동을 강조하고 아이들의 본성을 존중하고 인위적이지 않은 자연스러운 교육을 강조했다는 점에서 당시 영국 사회는 물론 유럽의 교육 현장에 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 이러한 샬롯 메이슨의 교육방법은 공교육에 대한 반성 및 새로운 교육방법에 대한 논의가 활발해지고 있는 오늘날 한국의 교육 현장에서 시사하는 바가 크다고 볼 수 있다. 또한 유아교육 분야에서 새로운 패러다임의 하나로 자리 잡고 있는 생태유아교육의 이념과 방법적인 면에서 매우 유사함을 알 수 있다. 생태유아교육에서는 교실활동보다는 바깥활동을 강조하고;아이들을 한울님으로 모시고자 하며;삶교육과 살림교육을 지향하고 있는데;이러한 점이 샬롯 메이슨의 교육방법과 비슷한 부분이다. 본 연구를 통해 생태유아교육에서 제안하는 교육방법에 대한 가치를 새롭게 인식함과 동시에 샬롯 메이슨의 교육방법에 대한 보다 깊이 있는 연구가 진행될 필요가 있음을 제안하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study aims to understand Charlotte Mason s educational methods and consider their significance in eco early childhood education. Charlotte Mason was English educational thinker and practitioner working actively from the late 19th century utill the early 20th century; she was a proponent of education that follows children s nature;life education;connective education;and education that cultivates volition. Her educational methods greatly affected English society at the time;as well as educational sites in Europe;in that she emphasized activities where nature was experienced;valued children’s natures;and stressed natural as opposed to artificial education. Charlotte Mason’s educational methods have significant implications in Korea s educational setting today;where reflection on public education and discussions about new educational methods are actively being conducted. In addition;it is very similar to eco early childhood education;which is laying a foundation as one of the new paradigms in the field of early childhood education in relation to ideology and methods. Eco early childhood education emphasizes outdoor activities more than class activities;worships children as “Hanulnim”;and pursues life and living education; these points are similar to the educational methods of Charlotte Mason. The present study intends to recognize anew the value of educational methods suggested by ecological early childhood education and proposes that more profound research on Charlotte Mason s educational methods will be beneficial in this light.
