국문 초록

아우구스티누스는 존재론에서 하느님(God), 영식(Soul), 물체(Bodies)의 3위계의 실재(reality)를 설정하고, 이에 대응하여 ‘신적 이지’(rationes aeternae), ‘인간적 이지’(ratio hominis), ‘물질적 이지’(ratio seminales)가 각 실재의 정신적 이치 또는 원리로 있다고 보았다. 이로부터 인간이 갖는 앎에는 물질적 이지의 감각에 관한 지식(scientia)과 신적 이지에 관한 지혜(sapientia)의 2가지로 분류한다. 인간의 삶의 궁극적 목적은 행복이며, 이 행복은 영원한 진리를 앎으로써 가능한데, 이는 신적 이지에 속하는 지혜(sapiens)의 획득으로만 가능해진다. 지혜의 학습은 경험이나 교사의 가르침으로 이루어지지 않는다. 그의 가장 독창적인 교육사상은 지혜의 획득이 감각 체험이나, 플라톤적 회상이나, 가르침으로 되는 것이 아니며 오직 하느님 또는 그의 빛으로 오신 그리스도의 비춤(illumination)으로 가능하다는 학설이다. 그의 신적조명설(divine illumination)은 헬레니즘과 헤브라이즘을 종합한 위대한 교육사상으로, 종교교육의 목적, 원리, 교수학습의 이론과 실제를 제시한 종교교육의 모형으로 볼 수 있으며, 현대사회에서도 여전히 그 의의가 큰 사상이다.

영문 초록

Augustine’s ontology consists of a 3 level hierarchial structure of reality woh God, Soul, and Bodies. Corresponding to each of these three levels of reality is a principle or ratio. They are the rationes aeternae, the ratio hominis, and the rationes seminales. Augustine distinguished two kinds of knowledge: Scientia(knowledge) is the knowledge on the physical bodies, and sapientia(wisdom) is the knowledge on the rationes aeternae. Sapientia is concerned with the acquisition of happiness and the ultimate goal of human existence. The ultimate goal of sapientia is the truth of God, which alone can bring true blessedness. The learning of sapientia is independent of experience, and sapientia is not possible to teach by a teacher. It is Augustine’s originality to introduce the theory of illumination in learning sapientia. According to his thought of divine illumination man does not acquire sapientia through sense experience or through Platonic recollection or through teaching. The true teacher is Christ, who Himself is the truth and who illuminates every man. His theory of divine illumination is a great thought unifying Helenism and Hebraism providing the goal, principle, theory and practice of learning of religious education. It is a exemplary model of religious education that is still significant in the present society.
