국문 초록

아우구스티누스는 『그리스도교 교양』에서 수사학의 목적을 진리에 대한 가르침에 둠으로써 수사학을 교수법으로 전환시켰다. 아우구스티누스 수사학에서 연설가는 교사의 역할 중에서 일부분으로 이해해야 한다. 그에게 있어 연설가는 교사와 다름이 없다. 그런데 아우구스티누스는 교사의 성품이 수사적 기법보다 우선한다고 주장한다. 고전 수사학과 아우구스티누스 수사학은 모두 연설가의 윤리를 강조한다. 그러나 고전 수사학이 연설가의 윤리를 설득을 목표로 신뢰할만한 인물로 보이는 데 치중하는데 반해, 아우구스티누스는 선한 삶 자체의 가치를 강조한다는 점에서 차이가 있다. 아우구스티누스가 교사의 윤리를 강조한 이유는 진리교육이라는 새로운 수사학적 환경에 의한 것이다. 아우구스티누스는 수사학을 진리라는 목적과 신적 사랑의 질서에 의해 구조화한다. 그는 플라톤의 위계적인 세계관을 수용하여 인간의 삶의 목적과 교육의 올바른 목적을 행복 자체로 규정한다. 그는 모든 것들이 사랑의 질서(ordo amoris) 안에서 행복에 접근할 수 있다고 생각하고, 고대의 도덕 철학 전통인 사주덕을 사랑의 네 가지 형식으로 재해석한다. 그는 사주덕의 순서를 바꾸어 주요한 덕, 즉 절제와 용기, 정의와 지혜를 사랑의 네 가지 형식으로 전환한다. 그에 따르면, 행복이라는 교육 목적은 사랑의 질서에 자유교과가 순응할 때만 도달할 수 있다. 아우구스티누스에게 가르침은 신의 진리와 신적 행복, 사랑의 질서와 연관된 것이기 때문에 교사는 절대로 거짓을 말해서는 안 된다.

영문 초록

Augustine converted rhetoric into teaching methods by putting the purpose of rhetoric in teaching truth in De doctrina christiana. In Augustine’s rhetoric, the speaker should be understood as part of the teacher s role. He is no different from a teacher. Augustine argues, however, that teachers character takes precedence over rhetorical techniques. Both classical rhetoric and Augustine rhetoric emphasize the ethics of the speaker. But while classical rhetoric focuses on what appears to be a credible figure with the aim of persuading the speaker s ethics, Augustine emphasizes the value of good life itself. Augustine emphasized the ethics of teachers because of a new rhetorical environment called truth education. Augustinus structure rhetoric by the purpose of truth and the order of divine love. Augustine embraces Plato s hierarchical world view, defining the purpose of human life and the right purpose of education as happiness itself. Augustine thinks that all things have access to happiness within the order of love, and reinterprets the ancient moral philosophy tradition of the four cardinal virtues in four forms of love. He changes the order of the four cardinal virtues and converts the main virtues, namely moderation and courage, justice and wisdom, into four forms of love. According to him, the educational purpose of happiness can only be reached when the free textbook conforms to the order of love. Teachers should never tell lies because teaching to Augustine is related to the truth of God, the divine happiness, and the order of love.
