팔리어 율장에 등장하는 성소수자의 수행생활

국문 초록

한국사회에서 성소수자들은 편견과 혐오 속에서 차별받으며 소외된 채, 제도적으로 보호받지 못하고 살아간다. 우리나라 국민들 대다수는 성소수자도 다른 사람과 마찬가지로 존중받으며 동등한 대우를 받아야 한다고 생각하지만, 아직 차별금지법이 제정되지 못하고 있다. 불자 성소수자들은 불교계가 기독교의 폭력적인 방식과 다른 자비스러운 논리를 내놓기를 바라며 성소수자에 대해 경전을 연구해주길 바랐다. 본 연구는 붓다 당시 성소수자들의 수행 생활을 조명하고자 전재성이 세계 최초로 완전 복원하여 번역 출간한 팔리어 율장에 등장하는 성소수자 사례를 분류하여 제시하였다. 팔리어 율장에는 남자 동성애, 여자 동성애, 양성애, 남자 빤다까, 여자 빤다까, 남성적 여자, 남녀구유인간, 성변환 사례가 있다. 이는 오랜 세월이 흐르는 동안까지 붓다는 출가자들을 성적지향, 성별, 성징, 출신지, 신분, 장애, 직업, 피부색 등을 이유로 차별하지않고모두포용하였다는것을말해준다. 빤다까가운데는은사가될정도의수행을한비구도등장한다. 당시에는성정체성을스스로밝히는장면이보이는데, 이는오늘날대부분의성소수자들이커밍아웃하지않는/못하는상황과차이를보인다. 인권적차원에서보면, 우리사회가붓다시대보다성소수자를차별하고혐오하는쪽으로후퇴한것처럼보인다. 이연구는성소수자들에대한이해를높이고, 그들에대한우리사회내의편견을교정할수있도록정보를제공한다.

영문 초록

In South Korean society, sexual minorities live under discrimination and hatred against them, and being ostracized, they are not protected by institution. The majority of people in South Korea have idea that the sexual minorities deserve respect and equal treatment, yet Discrimination Act has not been legislated. Buddhist sexual minorities have wanted Buddhism community in S.Korea to conduct a study on sexual minorities in Buddhism scriptures, hoping that the research presents merciful logic about sexual minorities, as opposed to Christian community’s violent way of approach. This research, trying to shed light on practice of sexual minorities, categorizes and presents the case of sexual minorities from Vinaya Pitaka, which is the world’s first fully-restored, translated and published by Jaeseong Jeon. In Vinaya Pitaka, there are cases of male homosexuality, female homosexuality, bisexuality, male Pantaka, female Pantaka, masculine female, intersexual, Gender transformation. This represents Buddha embraced all of monks and nuns without discriminating based on their sexual orientation, sexuality, sexual characteristics, place of origin, social status, disability, job, color of skin and etc. Among Pantakas, there is one who practiced enough to become a teacher. Back then, it showed that people revealed their sexual identities for themselves. This represents relative difference to present day where sexual minorities would(or could) not able to come out of closet. In terms of human right, present day seems to have been regressing than the era of Buddha, making discrimination and hatred towards sexual minorities. This research provides information in order to prompt understating of sexual minorities so that it helps to correct the bias among our society towards sexual minorities.
