<제면굿>의 욕망과 신명

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 제면할머니가 무조신으로서의 성격을 가지고 있다는 지점에 주목하면서 그러한 힘의 원천과 효과에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위하여 같은 무조신화로 언급되는 <바리공주>, <초공본풀이>와 비교하면서 <제면굿>의 특징을 알아볼 것이다. 먼저 제면할머니와 다른 무조신들이 가지는 변별적인 인물 자질을 확인하고 이어서 서사적 차이를 살펴본다. <제면굿>에서 제면할머니는 임신과 출산이 가능한 젊은 여성도, 과거를 보는 청년도 아니라는 점에서 다른 무조신화의 주인공과 다르다. 또 제면할머니는 생명을 구하거나 희생을 베풀지도 않을 뿐 아니라 욕심 많고 이기적인 인물로 그려진다는 점에서도 차별적이다. 이들을 비교하기 위해 본 연구에서는 제면할머니 욕망에 초점을 두면서 이를 서사의 국면에 따라 차근히 드러나고(조종 국면), 접근되고(능력 국면), 획득되는(수행 국면) 일련의 단계에 따라 논하고자 하였다. 제면할머니가 가지는 자질이나 특질은 다른 무조신의 것과는 다를 뿐만 아니라 그녀가 거치는 서사 단계들은 다른 무조신화들에 비해 사소하거나 세속적인 것처럼 보인다. 본 연구에서 제면할머니 서사에서 사소한 도구들의 세속적인 획득 과정에 개입하는 욕망의 정체를 억압된 신명으로 본다. 따라서 제면할머니의 위력은 그녀의 나이와 비례할 수밖에 없다. <제면굿>은 축적되거나 쌓이는 욕망을 가진 주체로서 노인에 대한 이야기이기도 하다. 제면할머니 이야기는 노인의 수만큼이나 다양한 노인의 이야기 가운데 하나로 읽어야 한다. 구술문학에서 다양하고 특수한 노인에 관한 담론이 생성된다면 그 중 하나가 이 제면할머니의 욕망이라고 본다.

영문 초록

I examine the source and effect of Jemyeon’s(grandmother who became the first shaman god) power while considering that the grandmother is presented as a godless person. To this end, I compare the characteristics of the Jemyeon-gut narrative with that of Princess Bari and the Chogong brothers, who are mentioned in the same myth on the origin of the shaman. First, I examine the distinctive qualities of Jemyeon and other sacred figures, followed by their narrative differences. Grandma Jemeyon is different from other protagonists of the same myth on the origin of the shaman in that she is not a young woman who can conceive and give birth, nor a young man who can take a state exam. In addition, it is differentiated in that Grandma Jemyeon is depicted as a greedy and selfish person as well as not only saving lives or making sacrifices. To compare them, this study focused on the desire of the grandmother and tried to discuss it according to a series of steps that are gradually revealed(controlled phase), approached(capability phase), and acquired(performance phase). I distinguish Jemyeon-gut from Princess Bari and Chogongbonpuri by finding that the qualities and characteristics of the grandmother seem to be different from those of the godless. Furthermore, the narrative stages that she goes through seem to be trivial or secular compared with other mythologies. Thus, I view the desire to intervene in the secular acquisition of trivial tools in this narrative as one of “oppressed excitement.” The power of the grandmother must be proportional to her age. Jemyeon-gut is thus a story about an elderly woman who has accumulated desires. That is, it is a story of the elderly with special powers. Hence, I add to the archetypes of the “special elderly” by the addition of the “desire of the grandmother.”
