제주도 본풀이에서 ‘동의’를 나타내는 언술의 서사적ㆍ화용론적 의미 연구

국문 초록

‘어서 걸랑 기영 헙서’는 제주도 본풀이 채록집에서 반복적으로 발견되는 중요한 언술이다. 이 말은 기본적으로 ‘그렇게 하자’라는 등장인물들의 동의 및 합의를 뜻한다. 구술전통담화에서 반복적으로 나타나는 언술은 반드시 기능을 한다는 점에서, 본 연구는 이 말이 지닌 서사적ㆍ화용론적 의미와 기능을 밝혔다. 첫째, 서사적 차원에서 ‘어서 걸랑 기영 헙서’는 명령-순응, 지도-인지, 제안-수용(부탁/요청-허락, 권유-동의, 설득-납득) 등과 같은 대화 상황에서 발화된다. 심방은 인물들의 대화 장면을 구연함으로써 그들이 합의에 이르는 과정을 재현한다. 또한 이 말은 발화 직후에 인물의 수행을 일으키며 기대하던 상황이 현실화되는 것을 보여 준다. 인물의 동의는 서사를 다음 시퀀스로 넘어가게 하면서 사건의 진행을 돕고, 합의를 바탕으로 이루어진 인물의 행위 및 시퀀스의 결과가 명백히 인물의 적극적인 선택과 결정으로 초래된 것임을 보여 준다. 곧 본풀이는 인물들의 선택과 동의 및 결과의 과정을 극적으로 보여 줌으로써 사건들의 인과적 연결을 공고히 하고 나아가 신화 장르 안에서 플롯의 개연성을 획득한다. 둘째, 화용론적 차원에서 ‘어서 걸랑 기영 헙서’는 인물들이 바라는 바가 현실화되는 말의 ‘주술성’을 조명한다. 문제 상황에서 인물은 상대와 대화하며 상대가 기대하는 어떤 상황을 예측하는 제안에 ‘어서 걸랑 기영 헙서’라고 동의한다. 그리고 담화는 곧바로 이것이 현실화됨을 보여 준다. 이러한 방식으로 예측 혹은 제안으로서의 상황이 다시 현실화되는 장면의 반복적 구연은 본풀이 전승자의 기억 및 청자의 이해를 돕고, 결과적으로 전승 집단의 커뮤니케이션을 원활하게 함으로써 그들이 지향하는 이야기 세계의 모델을 구축한다. 한편 인물 간의 동의를 통하여 현실화되는 이야기의 흐름은 ‘어서 걸랑 기영 헙서’가 지니는 말의 주술성과 신성성을 종교 의례의 맥락에서 재조명하게 한다. 많은 종교들은 그들의 신앙 안에서 그들의 지향을 이루어줄, 혹은 그들이 바라는 어떤 것에 동의하는 의미의 언술을 자주 사용한다. 대표적으로 가톨릭의 전례에서 신자들의 입을 통해 발화되는 ‘아멘’이 그러한데, 이는 ‘그렇게 되기를 바란다’라는 ‘동의’의 의미를 지닌다. 신자들은 ‘아멘’을 발화함으로써 가톨릭 신앙의 교리와 우주관을 적극적으로 믿는다는 것, 그리고 상대의 기도가 이루어지길 바란다는 나(그들)의 바람을 표명한다. 본풀이의 ‘어서 걸랑 기영 헙서’는 비록 심방 일인이 발화하는 말이지만, 그것의 반복적인 발화는 본풀이에서 인물이 기대하는 모종의 상황이나 그가 내린 결정에 대한 무속 사회의 암묵적인 동의라고 할 수 있다. 그리고 결과적으로는 이 말이 수반하는 행위들로 실현되는 신화 세계의 상(像)을 정당화하고 수용하는 집단의 표명이 된다. 곧 ‘어서 걸랑 기영 헙서’는 제주 무속 집단이 지향하는 신화 세계를 구축하기 위한 행위들의 성립 전제이며, 그를 바탕으로 하여 발화되는 인물 간의 협력적 동의이자 올바른 결과를 도출해 내게 하는 신성한 주술과도 같다. ‘어서 걸랑 기영 헙서’는 제주도 본풀이에만 발견되는 특수한 대화 언술이며, 그것은 이야기 속 인물들의 선택, 동의, 협력의 순간들을 내포하는 삶의 언어로 여겨진다. 본풀이가 제주도 무속 집단이 동의하고 합의한 이야기들이라면, ‘어서 걸랑 기영 헙서’는 타자와 공동체의 동의를 통하여 일의 순탄한 진행을 이루고자 했던 제주인의 공동체적 삶의 조율어이자 습관화된 전략이라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The phrase “Let us do it like that” (어서 걸랑 기영 헙서) is a common and important saying of shamans (shimbang in Jeju). It refers to an “agreement” between figures in the shaman myths (bonpuri) of Jeju. However, it is not a mere “yes” as in common parlance. Such sayings have a more functional role in traditional oral discourses. In this study, I determine the meanings and functions of the above statement of agreement at the narrative and pragmatics levels. At the narrative level, “Let us do it like that” is spoken by the figures as a mutual mode, namely, , , and (ask-permit, recommend-accept, convince-be convinced). These dialogs represent a process of agreement by the shaman or shimbang speaking and performing. As soon as the phrase is uttered, a situation that the figures have been expecting is actualized in the narrative. This is because such an utterance always leads to an action, that is, it is an agent of action or follows a sequence leading to realization. In this way, the agreement between figures generates a sequence and guides the narrative, connecting the myth’s plot to the choices and decisions of the figures. In short, the bonpuri in Jeju realizes the plot through an agreement between figures and the causality between these events. At the pragmatic level, the phrase “Let us do it like that” functions in the same way as “magic,” by allowing it to work as an incantation. That is, when a figure suggests doing something (“describing”), another agent agrees, and this agent performs the thing upon which they agreed (“second description”). In this way, similar or almost identical scenes are described twice by a shaman. This repetition allows the shaman to “memorize” the narrative but also serves to allow the audiences to comprehend the stories, thus creating smooth communication in the community. The community then forms a model of the narrative world that it pursues. One can also compare the phrase “Let us do it like that” with “Amen” in the Catholic divine services. This “agreement” also implies “I hope so” or “That is right,” uttered among mutuals such as God and humans or priests and believers. Just as Christians reaffirm their belief in the Catholic doctrine by uttering Amen, “Let us do it like that” serves a similar function in Jeju myths within the shaman community. It alludes to expectations, or their agreement and beliefs about their ideal world, which are then realized by an agent uttering this phrase. This phrase can be seen as a collaborative agreement—as a premise for establishing an ideal world in myths; One that is spoken between figures who create the world as a sacred incantation that generates the correct results. Such a phrase is remarkable in that it is only seen in myths in Jeju inside Korea and is a sort of tuning language among those residing in Jeju. In conclusion, the myths of Jeju are stories that people have agreed upon and accepted for a long time. If so, the phrase “Let us do it like that” is habituated speech for allowing good fortune as well as for agreement among community members.
