지계명상과 승가의 자정 원칙

국문 초록

계율과 수행은 어떤 관계에 있는가? 계율은 불교에 입문하는 역할만하고 제외되는 성질이 아니라 궁극의 경지에 도달할 때까지 같이 완성되어가는 것이다. 특히 계율은 출가자가 가장 먼저 익혀야 하는 수행 덕목이며, 부처님의 출자 제자들이 필수적으로 숙지해야 하는 규법이 바로 보름마다 수행정도를 확인하는 재계의식이다. 승가는 출가 대중의 의결권에 의해 운영하게 되어 있다. 이때 승가 구성원의 전원 참석과 전원 찬성의 원칙에 의해 지역별 자치적으로 운영할 수 있도록 율장에서 제정하고 있다. 부처님 당시부터 규범을 제정해 주어 법과 율에 의하여 여법하게 대중이 합의하여 처리해 왔다. 따라서 승가의 운영법은 일원적 일인 중심체계를 고수한 것이 아니다. 승가 구성원 각자가 모두 주인이 되어 대중 의결에 의하여 운영할 때 개인의 수행과 전법의 실현에도 효율적이라는 사실을 알 수 있게 한다. 그러므로 계율에 대한 결여는 수행과 깨달음의 결여로 이어지게 되고 종국에는 승가의 오염과 파화합으로 나타나게 된다. 즉 계율은 해탈의 모태 역할을 하기 때문이다. 이런 의미에서 선정 수행을 먼저 하는 것 보다 평생 지녀야 할 수행자의 덕목을 익히고 승가의 일을 처리할 수 있는 역량을 갖추는 것이 급선무이며, 더 큰 수행의 성과를 얻을 수 있다고 본다. 본고에서는 현대사회의 문제종교의 문제 등이 결국 계율의 부제에서 오는 현상으로 보고, 먼저 수행과 지계명상에 대해 살펴 본 후 승가의 자정법에 의하여 정화할 수 있는 방안을 찾아보고자 한다.

영문 초록

What is the relationship between precepts and practice? Precepts don t just lead to the world of Buddhism, they are supposed to be kept and then perfected when the practitioner reaches the ultimate stage. Precepts, more so than anything else, are the earliest virtues that practitioners must cultivate. Also the Buddha’s ordained disciples should be well aware of the Purification ceremony, which is held every half-moon to check the progress of their practice. The Sangha is meant to be run by the votes of ordained monks and nuns. The Vinaya Pitaka states that the Sangha should be run by local autonomy, following the principles of attendance and unanimity of all members. From the time of the Buddha, monks and nuns have taken care of these situations according to Dharma and Vinaya. Accordingly, the method of running the Sangha doesn’t adhere to a centralizing, one-person system. Thus, the lack of precepts and vinaya leads to the lack of practice and attainment run by a resolution, which is made by all of its members with a sense of ownership, the members then devote themselves to their individual practice and realization of the dharma more effectively. Which eventually led to the corruption and discord of the Sangha. In other words, precepts and vinaya are the beginning and base of liberation. It ll be more beneficial, in terms of practice, if practitioners first learn the lifelong virtues that they need to keep and develop the ability to handle the affairs of the Sangha before they dedicate themselves to meditation practice. This paper poses the problems of modern societies and religious matters have originated from lack of precepts. Therefore, we must first look into practices and the importance of keeping precepts, and propose ways to purify the Sangha through its own self-purification rules.
