국문 초록

고마나루 설화는 공주의 지역정체성을 담고 있는 특별한 이야기이다. 하지만 곰과 남자의 사랑, 어미에 의한 새끼의 죽음 등, 충격적인 화소들로 인해, 그 해석과 교육에 많은 어려움을 겪고 있다. 이 글은 공주 지역의 여러 설화들로부터 사랑과 죽음에 관한 지역 민중들의 사유체계를 이끌어 내고 이를 통해 고마나루 설화의 의미를 궁구하고자 하였다. 공주 지역 설화는 죽음이 모든 존재의 비극적 운명이라는 사실을 고귀하거나 미천한 신분을 가진 인물들은 물론 사람과 동물의 관계를 통해서도 보여주었다. 즉, 죽음은 보편적이며 비가역적이라는 것이다. 하지만 설화의 향유층인 민중들은 정(情)을 통하여 다른 사람이나 자연에 투합함으로써 죽음을 넘어설 수 있다고 믿었다. 지역의 특정 장소와 관련된 전설들은 그 장소에 죽은 주인공의 정이 깃들어 신이 된다고 이야기한다. 이렇게 보면 중요한 것은 신분이나 정체성이 아니라 정이다. 고마나루 설화는 한 남자에 대한 정 때문에 죽은 곰이 그 정으로 인해 물화(物化)하여 금강의 수호신이 된 이야기로, 이렇게 보면 교육적으로도 의미있는 이야기가 된다.

영문 초록

Gomanaru’s tales are a special story that reflects the local identity of Gongju. But shocking motifs, such as the love of a bear and a man, and the death of the cubs by their mothers, make them difficult to interpret. This paper attempts to derive the meaning of Gomanaru s tales from the local people s thinking system about love and death from various tales of Gongju. The tales of the Gongju showed that death is the tragic fate of all beings through the relationship between humans and animals as well as noble and humble characters. In other words, death is universal and irreversible. But people of the enjoyment of folk tales believed that they could overcome death by integrating with others or nature through sympathy(情). Legends related to a particular place in the area say that the sympathy of the dead hero remains in that place and becomes a god. In this sense, what matters is not status or identity but sympathy. Gomanaru’s tales are stories of a bear who died becauseIn this way of love for a man and became the goddess of the Geumgang. By interpreting this way, it becomes a story of educational value.
