벽송지엄의 선사상의 특징과 그 시적 형상화

국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 벽송지엄(碧松智嚴 1464~1534)의 사상의 특징과 그 시적 세계의 의미를 고찰하는 데 있다. 태고보우-환암혼수-구곡각운-벽계정심의 법맥을 잇고 있는 벽송지엄의 법명은 지엄, 법호는 야로(野老), 당호는 벽송이다. 지엄은 마음이 일체의 근원임을 인식하고, 지관(止觀) 수행실천을 통해 본래면목을 찾고자 하였다. 선교겸수(禪敎兼修)를 지향했던 지엄은 조사의 공안법문을 노래하고 성정적적한 수행과 탈속 무애한 깨달음의 경지를 게송으로 잘 표현하고 있다. 이러한 올곧은 수행의 삶의 흔적을 게송으로 잘 표현한 대표적인 저서가 『벽송당야로송』과 『벽송집』이다. 여기에는 그의 구도와 깨달음의 여정을 노래한 시, 자연교감의 한가함과 세외지심(世外之心)의 서정, 그리고 자신의 선지(禪旨)를 담아 다른 수행자들에게 보이는 지남이 되고 경책되는 격외와 시법의 시, 그리고 방하착(放下着)의 걸림이 없는 삶의 관조의 세계가 선명하게 드러나 있다. 결국 그의 이러한 선심(禪心)의 시심화(詩心化)의 세계는 직관적 사유와 시적 상상력의 조화로운 결과물임이 분명하다. 따라서 필자는 지엄의 무심합도(無心合道)에서 노래한 게송들을 중심으로 구도와 깨달음, 격외(格外)와 시법(示法), 자연교감과 세외지심(世外之心) 등의 유형을 통해 그의 선적 사유가 어떻게 시적으로 표현되고 있는가를 밝혔다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to trace the Seon thought of Seon master Byeoksong Jieom(1464~1534) and its being projected onto his verses. Succeeding the dharma linear of Taego Bowoo - Hwanam Honsu - Gugok Gakwoon - Byeokgye Jeongsim, Byeoksong Jieom s Dharma name is Jieom, his pen name is Yaro, and precept name is Byeoksong. Above all, Jieom understood that the mind is the very root of everything and also tried to find Buddha nature(original face of self-nature) focused on samadhi-meditation(or Samadha-vipassana) cultivation practice. Aiming at the unification of doctrine and meditation, he practiced koan teachings of the patriarchs and vividly expressed his enlightenment, clear mind, conscious awareness, and serenity based on their teachings in his verses as well. His chief anthologies which depicted his upright and non-desire mind are Byeoksongdang YaroJip and Byeksongjip, the collection of his poems. The marrow of aesthetics of Jieom’s verses is to express succinctly seeking after the Truth, obtaining enlightenment, developing or transform disciples, beyond the normal formula, and the mutual response with nature in his excellent poetic imagination. Consequently, the message of his poetic expressions of Seon-mind which were produced in the course of ascetic life can be an alternative to heal the loss and anxiety of modern people who live a busy life with greed.
