근대 예술개념 안에서 서예의 이해

국문 초록

문자의 이미지를 통하여 시각적 만족을 얻으려는 시도는 동서고금을 막론하고 인류역사의 어느 시기에나 존재하여왔다. 서구의 ‘Calligraphy’와 동북아시아의 서예(書藝), 이슬람 문화권의 문자그림이 대표적이다. 한국에서는 서예로, 중국에는 서법(書法)이라 부르며, 일본에서는 서도(書道)라고 일컫는 글자의 예술이 ‘Calligraphy’로영역되었을 때, 근대에 탄생한 서구의 예술개념 안에서 이 양자 사이의 거리는 같은차원에서 이해할 수 없을 정도로 서로 다른 성질의 것으로 변모한다. 따라서 글자의예술에 대한 서구인들이 가진 의문은 ‘Craft’로 이해되는 ‘Calligraphy’가 어떻게 순수예술이 될 수 있느냐는 것이고, 동북 아시아인들의 답답함은 서예가 지닌 예술적 속성을 서구인은 왜 이해하지 못하느냐는 것이다. 본 논문은 오늘날 우리가 일반적으로사용하고 있는 서구 근대 예술개념을 빌어 서예의 예술적 속성에 대해 이해해 봄으로써 오늘날 영화포스터나 상품의 이름에 쓰인 손 글씨와 서예에 근본적 차이에 대한 이해를 도모하고 아울러 미술로써의 서예교육이 지향해야 할 지침으로도 활용될 수 있을것이다.

영문 초록

Regardless of East, West, Old, and New, the attempt on securing visualsatisfaction through the transformation of letter has been every period ofhuman history. The examples are ‘Calligraphy in the West’ and ‘Calligraphyin the Northeastern Asia. It is called ‘Art of Penmanship’ in Korea, ‘Law of Penmanship’ in China,and ‘Way of Penmanship’ in Japan. However, as the Art of Penmanship istranslated to ‘Calligraphy’, the distance between the art and the calligraphywhich are unable to be understood in the same dimension in the concept ofModern Art turns to the different quality. Therefore, the question on the art of letter to the Western people is howcalligraphy is accepted not as craft but as fine art, and the depressed feelingby Eastern Asian is why the Westerners fail to understand artistic quality ofcalligraphy. Borrowed the concept of Western Modern Art nowadays, this paper tries tounderstand fundamental difference between hand writing in movie poster ormerchandise package through comprehending artistic attributes ofcalligraphy and provide useful reference for calligraphy education as fine art
