국문 초록

노자는 사회적 규범으로서의 도덕을 부정한 대표적인 사람으로 알려져 있다. 그가 그 도덕을 부정한 데에는 특별한 의도가 숨어 있다. 이 특별한 의도는 노자의 세계관과 밀접하게 관련된다. 노자의 세계관은 인간이 행하는 일체의 행동 이면에는 절대적 기준이 있다 는 것으로 요약된다. ‘道’는 그 절대적 기준을 가리키는 용어이며, ‘德’은 그 道의 작용을 가리키는 용어이다. 사회적 규범에 관한 집요한 관심은 노자가 말하는 진정한 의미에서의 ‘道德’을 외면하는 결과를 초래한다. 이러한 이유에서 노자는 강력하게 사회적 규범으로서의 도덕을 부정하는 것이다. 그러나 노자가 말하는 ‘道德’이 인간의 행동을 통하여 표현되거나 획득된다는 점을 고려할 때 사회 규범으로서의 도덕 또한 긍정적인 의미에서 재해석된다.

영문 초록

It is well known that Lao-tzu denies the moral as a social rule. There seems to be a special reason for him to do so. It is closely related with his world-view that there is an absolute standard behind all the behavior s of men. Tao is the term referring to the absolute criterion, and Te means its power. Our inveterate interest on the moral as a social rule leads us to deny Tao-te which is insisted as the authentic moral by Lao-tzu. In this respect, Lao-tzu may be classified as an amoralist Tao-te which exists behind behaviors of men does not appear in itself. In this sense, Tao-te can be defined as the logical presupposition of the behavior s, the behavior s of men being the manifestations of Tao-te. On this account, Tao-te inclu des not only moral activities, but also other activities such as academic, aesthetic and religious activities. Therefore, the moral as a social rule can have positive place in Lao-tzu s world-view. The relationship between Tao-te and the moral as a social rule has important implications for the nature and the practice of moral education in school. According to Lao-tzu s world-view, moral education mu st be organized around such concepts as to lead stu dents to understand the fact that every behavior of men can be meaningful as long as it contributes to the actualization of self, that is, for the perfection of man as man, not just to lead them to know the social rule and act on it.
