이 글은 「파이드로스」 편에 나타난 영혼불멸성의 도덕교육적 함의를 밝히고 그것이 도덕교육에 주는 시사를 살펴보는 데에 목적이 있다. 「파이드로스」 편에 나타나고 있는 영혼불멸성과 에로스의 관계는 교육목적의 절대성 뿐 아니라 목적과 과정 사이의 역동적 교섭을 함의하고 있다는 점에서 그 자체가 도덕적 의미를 지닌다. 영혼의 불멸성과 에로스의 역동적인 힘은 교과교육에 헌신하는 교사를 통해 여실하게 표현된다. 모든 교과교육은 도덕교육이며, 교과교육에 헌신하는 불멸성의 化身으로서의 교사를 길러내는 것이야말로 도덕적 인간형성의 핵심을 이룬다고 말할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to reveal the educational implication of morality in the light of the concept of ‘the immortality of soul’. According to the concept of ‘the immortality of soul’, the ultimate aim and activity of moral education are logically related and mutually supported toward a fuller understanding the moral education. For understanding the immortality of soul, it is very important to examine the meaning of the proposition ‘All soul is immortal’ in the context of drama and logical context of the 「Phaedrus」. The concept of the immortality of soul leads us to interpreting the immortality as a definition of the soul. According to the definition, the immortality of soul does not imply unending duration of physical time, but the being of metaphysical dimension of Reality. The concept of ‘the immortality of soul’ presents a new point of view on the Reality. The self-moving, immortality in other word, explains the mode of soul or immortality. In particular, the concept of ‘self-moving’ implies the relation between immortality of soul and eros as a divine madness. The relation between immortality and eros leaves open the possibilities of interpreting the immortality, in both aspect, namely, ‘self-manifestation’ and ‘process of acquisition’, alternatively. Applying the former, it is revealed that self-moving or immortality of soul manifests itself ‘here and now’ through one s eros. Applying the latter, it is revealed that one s eros witnesses his acquisition of immortality, and one who seized by immortality moves toward one s own perfection of eros, in accordance with the self-moving power of soul. The discussion of the relation between immortality and eros enables us to interpret the relation between standard and process or aim and method of education afresh. In the theory of twofold structure of education, standard or aim of education means the logical cause or presupposition, ‘logically inferred’ from educational activities. The argument of the immortality of soul, however, emphasizes not only the absoluteness of standard but also the soul s power of self-moving. In this argument, the self-moving power of soul is not as if standard could be inferred from activity. The existence of teacher embodies dynamic transaction between standard and process of education. The teacher devotes himself to the self-moving of Reality by philosophic oratory. Philosophizing and orating contribute to realizing the immortality of soul mutually. The teacher s special duty is to turn the written signs in which subject is now enshrined back into living thought or feeling. Education is human conduct that pursues ‘Superfluity’. Education is based on this belief, and have been developed this one. The innateness of the longing for the truth, the beauty, and the holiness is apparent even in the earliest and dimmest stage. The concept of ‘the immortality of soul’ help to reveal and appreciate that human life is based on the immortality of soul, that eros is to be shown in the process of education, and that the immortality of soul is embodied into the process of subject education. In this view, moral education is subject-matter education that is to turn the written signs in which subject-matter is now enshrined back into living thought and feeling. The teacher is moral man who embodies ‘the immortality of soul’ in himself.
