국문 초록

키에르케고르의 실존단계이론은 그의 간접전달이론과 함께, 도덕교육을 설명하는 이론으로서의 윤리학을 예시하는 것으로 해석될 수 있다. 키에르케고르에 의하면, 인격함양의 과정은 자기선택을 통하여 자기지식을 형성하는 과정이며, 자기선택은 인격함양이 사고 수준의 변화가 아닌 존재 수준의 변화, 즉 실존 단계의 변화라는 점에서 불가피하게 요청된다. 맥킨타이어는 자기선택의 아이디어에 대하여, 그것은 이른바 ‘계몽주의 기획’의 최말단적 표현으로서, 그 근본적이고 극단적인 비합리적 선택이 용인될 경우에 합리적 도덕 문화의 전통이 송두리째 파괴될 가능성이 있다는 점을 심각하게 우려한다. 그러나 그의 비판은 키에르케고르의 문제의식과 그의 저작활동의 전체적인 목적을 정당하게 고려하지 않은 데서 비롯된 것이다. 키에르케고르의 실존윤리학은 기독교인의 형성을 목적으로 하는 인격함양의 과정을 설명하는 이론으로서, 맥킨타이어가 지지하는 목적론적 윤리학과 조화롭게 양립할 가능성이 있다.

영문 초록

Kierkegaard s idea of existence implies an alternative ethical theory which can survive Wittgenstein s radical scepticism on the science of ethics in his A Lecture on Ethics . Despite of MacIntyre s condemnation for its depending on radical and ultimate choices , this theory is an exemplary case of the teleological ethics as the science which is to enable men to understand how they make the transition for man-as-he-happens-to-be to man-as-he-could-be-if-he-realized-his-essential-nature . In Kierkegaard s view, men are required to choose their selves absolutely for leaping upward their own stages of existence, leaded to faith in its Christian sense. The self-choice can be construed as the key to self-becoming by way of self-knowledge in that it makes possible the existential awakening which results in the changes in one s own being, contrasted with those in thought. However, MacIntyre diagnosed the idea of self-choice as a most serious threat to the whole tradition of rational moral culture. But his view has to be adjusted by taking into consideration the import of Kierkegaard s life-ling works. Kierkegaard s theory of stages and indirect communication can be interpreted as part of his existential ethics which exemplifies an ethical theory as explanation of moral education. I wonder that MacIntyre missed this point.
