불교수행의 경로로서의 經典과 參禪

국문 초록

경전공부와 참선은 불교수행의 주된 경로이다. 그러나 경전공부와 참선이 불교수행에서 모두 중요하다고 말하는 수준에 그친다면, 불교수행이 어떤 것인지를 알 수 없는 것은 물론이고, 수행의 실제에서도 수행자는 소기의 목적을 달성하기 어렵다. 불교의 수행을 올바로 이해하기 위해서는 무엇보다도 경전공부와 참선을 중심으로 한 심성함양의 기제를 명확히 드러낼 필요가 있다. 경전공부는 ‘개념’을 통하여 그것의 논리적 가정으로 들어 있는 진여를 실현하는 반면, 참선은 진여가 직접적으로 표현된 ‘상징’을 통하여 진여를 실현한다. 심성함양의 기제에 초점을 둘 때, 참선은 진여의 직접적 표현으로 이해되는 ‘진여용’과 성격을 같이 한다고 말할 수 있다. 그러나 참선이 지관문 수행에 속해 있다는 점에서 드러나듯이, 참선은 진여를 직접 겨냥하는 수행이라는 점에서 진여용과 차별화된다. 경전공부와 참선은 수행의 기제가 상이하지만, 이들은 서로가 서로를 요청하는 순환 관계에 놓임으로써 수행을 보다 완전한 것으로 만든다. 이때 경전공부는 수행의 실질적인 추진력이 되며, 참선은 그 수행의 방향을 지시한다.

영문 초록

Reading of sutra and practice of Seon[禪] are major channels in Buddhist practice. But only if we say that reading of sutra and practice of Seon are all important in Buddhist practice, we would not know what Buddhist practice is, and added to this, an ascetic would not accomplish the object of the Buddhist practice. To understand Buddhist practice correctly, above all it must be explained explicitly how the cultivation of Mind in Buddhism is realized in reading of sutra and practice of Seon. In reading of sutra, Suchness[眞如] is realized by concept (the content of sutra) which presupposes Suchness; on the other hand, in practice of Seon, Suchness is realized by symbol which is considered as direct manifestation of Suchness. When we attach importance to the mechanism of cultivation of Mind in Buddhism, practice of Seon shares the nature of Function of Suchness[眞如用] together which is direct manifestation of Suchness. But practice of Seon is distinguished from Function of Suchness in that it belongs to practice of concentration and sapience [止觀] which points to Suchness direct. The mechanism of cultivation of Mind in reading of sutra and practice of Seon is different, but reading of sutra demands practice of Seon, and vice versa. This circularity makes Buddhist practice more perfect. In that case, reading of sutra may be considered as real driving force of Buddhist practice, and practice of Seon as direction indicator of that practice.
