교육의 내재적 목적의 종교적 의의

국문 초록

교육의 내재적 목적은 피터즈나 허스트의 교육이론으로 대표된다. 허스트는 희랍의 자유교육의 이념에서의 지식과 마음의 관련으로 교육의 내재적 목적을 주장하였으며 피터즈는 선험적 논의방식에 의하여 교육에서의 지식 추구를 정당화하였다. 그러나 J. 와이트는 그들이 주장하는 지식의 내재적 목적은 현대의 민주주의 사회에서 타당한 목적이 아니라고 비판하며 ‘개인의 웰빙’을 교육의 목적으로 내세운다. 와이트의 비판은 지식 교육에서 부차적으로 발생하는 문제에 대한 경고로서의 의미가 있거나 지식을 학년 또는 학교 급별로 어느 정도의 수준까지 가르쳐야 하는가에 관한 문제 제기로서의 의미를 가질 수 있으나, 지식 교과의 성격을 원래의 의미와는 다르게 규정할 위험이 있으며, 더 나아가 교육과 삶의 방향을 내재적 목적에서와는 다른 방향으로 이끄는 것이 된다. 그러나 허스트의 교육의 내재적 목적이 교육의 내재적 목적의 유일하게 타당한 관점인 것은 아니며 내재적 목적에 대한 새로운 해석이 가능하다. 허스트는 희랍 자유교육의 이념에서 ‘실재’를 배제하고 ‘지식’과 ‘마음’만으로 ‘지식의 형식’을 주장하였지만, ‘형식’이라는 의미를 논리적으로 분석해 보면 거기에는 ‘실재’가 가정되어 있다는 것을 추론할 수 있다. 지식의 형식에서 실재를 드러내는 것은 교육의 내재적 목적을 새롭게 해석하는 한 가지 관점이 될 수 있다. 실재를 토대로 하는 교육의 내재적 목적은 교육에 종교적 의의가 있다는 것을 밝히는 것이 된다.

영문 초록

There are two kinds of educational aims, the intrinsic and the extrinsic aims of education. P. H. Hirst and R. S. Peters are representative philosophers of education insisting on the intrinsic aim of education. Hirst explained his idea of the intrinsic aim of education on the basis of the Greeks liberal education which related knowledge to mind. So he emphasized forms of knowledge in education. But he did not agree with the idea of reality in the Greeks liberal education. Peters justified knowledge by transcendental argument. But according to J. White, the intrinsic aim of knowledge and education can not be all important in modern democratic society. He proposes Well-being as educational aim. His educational theory can contribute to planning the curriculum and can turn us to the problems in school situations. But at the same time his theory has some problems in reforming and changing the knowledge in school subjects. It must be admitted, however, that Hirst s intrinsic aim of education is not the only kind of intrinsic aim of education and not the only valuable one. We can stretch the meaning of intrinsic aim of education. Hirst excluded the reality in his theory of forms of knowledge. But when we analyze further the forms of knowledge, we will find that the reality is presupposed in it. And the fact that the reality plays a role in the forms of knowledge means that there is religious aspect in the intrinsic aim of education.
