국문 초록

도전 행동을 보이는 최중증 발달장애인 자녀를 둔 부모의 돌봄 부담은 매우 크고 스트레스가 높다고 알려져 있으나, 실제 연구는 매우 부족하다. 이 연구는 최중증 발달장애인 중에서도 도전 행동을 보이는 자녀를 둔 부모의 돌봄 경험을 탐색하고자 한 것이다. 이를 위해 서울시 최중증 낮활동 시범사업에 참여하는 이용자 중 17명의 부모를 추천받아 돌봄경험을 중심으로 초점집단인터뷰를 실시하였다. 연구결과, 부모들은 자녀의 도전 행동으로 인한 얼룩진 상처로 켜켜이 쌓인트라우마를 겪고 있었으며, 세상으로부터 쫓겨나 정처 없이 떠도는 마음으로 홀로 돌봄을 감당하고 있었다. 또한 연구참여자들은 막다른 골목에 내올리고, 삶의 길을 잃어버리며, 이번 생은 없는 것 같은 참담함을 경험하고 있었다. 이러한 어려움 속에서 생존을 위해 자녀 문제를 외면하고 회피하기도 하고, 떨어져보기도 하는 등 나름의 전략을 활용하고 있었다. 도전 행동을 보이는 발달장애인 자녀를 둔 부모의 돌봄 경험은 단순한 힘듦을 넘어 참담하고, 고통스러운 과정의 연속이었다. 이를 토대로 이 연구는 도전 행동을 보이는 최중증 발달장애인에 대한 사회적 돌봄 체계의 확장과 그 부모에 대한 지원 필요성을 제기하였다.

영문 초록

It is known that the care burden of parents caring for people with severe developmental disabilities with challenging behaviors is very high and stressful, but there is very little research on the care experiences of parents. The purpose of this study was to provide a deep understanding and insight into the experiences of parents who care for people with severe developmental disabilities with challenging behavior. This study explores the care-taking experiences of parents of children with severe developmental disabilities who show challenging behavior. A total of 17 parents were recruited from the Severe Daytime Activity Pilot Project in Seoul, and focus group interviews were conducted regarding their care-taking experiences. It was found that parents experienced piled up trauma caused by their children s challenging behaviors, and felt that they were being driven out of the world and were aimlessly wandering around while taking care of their children by themselves. In addition, the participants felt that they reached a dead end, lost their way of life, and were living a life that was not theirs. In the midst of these difficulties, they used their own coping strategies such as separating themselves from their children s for survival. The care-taking experience of these parents showed that the challenging behaviors of their children was a continuously difficult, distressing, and painful process. This study suggests the expansion of the social care system for people with severe developmental disabilities and the need of support for their parents.
