영어 형용사적 수식어구 사용의 오류분석과 영어교육에의 적용방안

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 영어와 한국어의 형용사적 수식어구의 오류분석을 통하여 영어 학습자들이 자주 범하는 형용사적 수식어구 오류를 집중 분석하고 영어 교육 현장에 적용할 수 있는 언어 형식적 측면의 방안을 마련하는 데에 중점을 둔다. 오류분석 이론에 의거한 절차대로 오류분석을 준비하는데 연구 대상은 중학생 280명으로 상위권/하위권을 나누어 학생의 수준 차이를 고려하였다. 연구 범위는 영어의 전치·후치 형용사적 수식어구를 기초로 하여 형태적·의미적 차이점을 살펴보고 영어의 형용사적 수식어구 중 빈번하게 쓰이는 유형을 추출하여 예문들을 만들어 학습자에게 제시하였다. 결과물을 수거하여 오류의 예시들을 열거하고 오류분석을 하였다. 연구 결과는 한국 학습자들은 한국어 구조에 존재하지 않는 영어 후치수식 구조에서 많은 오류를 범했다. 그 원인은 크게 두 가지인데 첫째는 모국어의 간섭 현상에 의한 것이고 둘째는 영어의 복잡한 내적 구조로 인한 영어 간섭 및 전이 현상에 의한 것이었다. 이에 따라 언어 형식 교육에 적용할 수 있는 세 가지 방안을 마련하였다. 그 방안으로 첫째, 형태초점 의사소통 접근법을 통해 언어 형식에 주목해야 한다. 둘째, 과업을 통하여 언어형식이 학습되어야 한다. 마지막으로, 멀티미디어 활용 언어형식 교수 방법을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 학생들의 언어 형식에 집중하고 영어 교수·학습을 향상시키는 데에 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of the present study is to investigate Korean middle school students’ errors of adjective modifiers in English writing. Middle school students grammatical errors were analyzed through the error analysis procedure. The target students were 280 male middle school students, whose levels of English language proficiency were divided into low and high levels. This study employed the error analysis of the use of English pre-adjectival and post-adjectival modification. The students solved fill-in-blanks of adjectival modifiers in English, and their error patterns were gathered and analyzed. The results of this study show that most errors committed by the Korean middle school students occurred in the structure of post-modification which does not belong to the Korean language structure. Two major errors of adjectival modification were involved in the interlingual transfer of the native language, Korean, and the intralingual transfer from the complicated English language structure. This study offers three alternatives to improving the use of the English language form and structure, including adjectival modfiers: a form-focused communicative approach, task-based instruction, and technology-assisted language learning. This study implies that teachers should pay close attention to students’use of the English language form by improving their English langauge instruction and curriculum.
