[익심]의 연결어미의 변천 및 문법 ―‘-을수록’을 중심으로―

국문 초록

본고는 [익심]의 의미를 담당하던 연결어미의 변천 과정을 살펴보고 이를 바탕으로 근대국어 ‘-을수록’의 문법적 특징을 기술하였다. 중세국어에서 [익심]의 의미는 ‘-도록’과 ‘-디옷’이 담당한 반면 ‘-을수록’은 17세기부터 점차 그 예가 많아진다. ‘-을수록’은 17세기 언간류에서부터 그 예가 본격적으로 확인되는데, 그 특징은 선행절은 시간이나 사유의 더해감을 나타내고 후행절은 심리적 태도를 나타낸다는 것이다. ‘-을수록’은 18세기에는 언해문에서도 그 예가 확인되는데, 선행절은 ‘갈수록’, ‘오랠수록’으로 나타난다. 17, 18세기에는 이 외의 절 연결의 기능을 하는 ‘-을수록’의 예는 드물게 나타난다. 19세기 ‘-을수록’의 문법적 특징은 비교적 초기 문법 양상을 반영한 구문(ⅰ유형)과 그렇지 않은 구문(ⅱ유형)으로 구분하여 논의하였다. (ⅰ) 유형의 ‘갈수록’, ‘생각할수록’ 구문은 대체로 이전 시기와 유사한 문법 양상을 띠면서 후행절에서 분포가 확대된 모습을 보인다. (ⅱ)의 유형은 19세기에 갑자기 높은 빈도로 출현하여 ‘-을수록’의 세력 확대와 직접적으로 연관된다. (ⅱ)의 유형은 크게 개별 사건과 일반적 사건을 나타내는 예문으로 분류되는데, 17세기부터 개별 사건을 나타내던 ‘-을수록’은 19세기에 일반적 사건에까지 확대되어 쓰이게 된다.

영문 초록

This study explained the grammatical characteristics of ‘-을수록’ in the Pre-modern Korean after discussing the historical change of conjunctive endings expressing deepening. While ‘-디옷’, ‘-도록’ expressed the meaning of deepening in the Middle Korean, ‘-을수록’ appeared gradually from the 17th century. In the 17th, 18th century, ‘-을수록’ appeared in old vernacular letters. ‘-을수록’ constructions expressed the deepening of time or thought in the preceding clause and psychological attitudes in the following clause. ‘-을수록’ was also found in Korean translation of Chinese classics in the 18th century. In these cases, ‘갈수록’, ‘오랠수록’ appeared in the preceding clause. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the ordinary examples of ‘-을수록’ were rare. The grammatical characteristics of ‘-을수록’ in the 19th century were discussed separately in the type of (ⅰ) that reflected relatively early patterns of grammar and the type of (ⅱ) that did not. ‘갈수록’ and ‘생각할수록’ constructions belonged to the type of (ⅰ) had similar grammatical patterns to the previous period, but the distribution tended to expand in following clause. The type of (ii) was largely classified as an individual event and a common event. ‘-을수록’ that has represented an individual event since the 17th century was used to represent a common event in the 19th century and it was directly related to the expansion of function.
