국문 초록

가르치는 행위에 필연적으로 동반될 수밖에 없는 강제성을 해소하기 위하여 가장 흔하게 인용되는 대화이론 가운데 대표적인 이론이 Freire의 대화이론이다. 그러나 최근 국내외의 연구자들은 이 대화이론이 결국 주체중심적인 인간관계에 기초하고 있음을 분석해낸다. 본 연구는 탈중심화라는 사회문화적 흐름에 부합하면서도, 즉 주체를 버리면서도 가르치는 행위를 정당화할 수 있는 이론적 근거를 프랑스의 철학자 Levinas의 타자윤리학에서 찾아보았다. 그는 직접 ‘가르침’이라는 단어를 사용하여 주체와 타자의 관계를 설명해낸다. 그의 이론에 따르면 가르치고 배우는 관계란 나보다 우선하여 존재하는 타자를 필연적으로 받아들임으로써 자신의 유한성을 확장하여 무한성에 접근하는 윤리적 관계이다. 교사이건 학생이건 서로의 존재에 대하여 반응할 책임을 지는데 이 반응이 곧 가르침이고 배움이라는 것이다.

영문 초록

Paulo Freire’s theory of dialogue and Socratic maieutics are most frequently used examples when trying to resolve or alleviate a vexed paradox of education, namely, the predicament of ‘enforcement’ inherent in teaching. However recent studies have analyzed Freirian dialogic theory of teaching to be subject-centered. This study tries to justify the teaching-learning relations despite the cultural and theoretical phenomena of ‘de-centering of the subject’ on Levinasian ethics of the other. According to Levinas, teaching-learning relationship is the ethical relationship between the subject and the other in which a self abandons his totality and expands his limit to access and accept the other’s infinity. The other is prior and superior to the subject. Students and teachers have responsibilities to respond to the others’ existence and this respond is both teaching and learning. In this view, we should not attend to mere techniques of take knowledge out of students. Knowledge does not come from inside the student, it comes from outside, from the other. Thus we should not address ‘what and how’ to teach but ‘who’. Students meet a teacher first not a curriculum in teaching.
