근육장애인들이 경험한 인터넷 사용의 의미

국문 초록

이 연구는 장애로 인하여 일상생활에서 이동과 사회적 소통에 어려움을 겪는 근육장애인들의 인터넷 사용의 의미를 탐구하고자 한 것이다. 이를 위하여 8명의 연구참여자를 대상으로 심층면접을 수행하여 Giorgi의 기술적 현상학 연구로 접근하였다. 분석결과, 연구참여자들이 경험한 인터넷 사용의 의미는 ‘비자발적 고립상황에서 유일한 소통 창구이자 소일거리’, ‘실존의 혁신적 매개체가 된 인터넷’, ‘편견에서 자유로운 익명의 무장애 유토피아’, ‘온라인세계의 양면 가치 속에서 몸 사리며 어울리기’, ‘인터넷 결속을 강화하여 장애를 긍정(희망)의 상징으로 재정립하기’로 나타났다. 근육장애인들의 경험의 구조는 시간과 공간의 흐름에 따라, ‘오프라인에서 장애로 인한 소외’, ‘온라인에서 익명성으로 활동하면서 인간적 대우, 소통, 공감’, ‘오프라인에서 존재가 드러남으로 인한 2차 소외’, ‘온라인 커뮤니티 결속으로의 도피, 보호’, ‘온라인에서 통찰을 통해 장애에 대한 새로운 의미부여’ 순으로 이어지고 있었다. 연구결과를 바탕으로, 결론에서는 인터넷 사용을 통해 근육장애인의 일상생활과 사회적 관계를 개선하기 위한 논의와 제언을 추가했다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning of Internet use by persons with muscular dystrophy who have difficulty moving and communicating in their daily lives due to disability. To this end, an in-depth interview was conducted with eight research participants to approach Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological research. According to the study, the meaning of Internet use by research participants is ‘the sole communication channel and pastime in a non-voluntary isolation’, ‘the Internet that has become an innovative medium of existence’, ‘an anonymous barrier-free utopia that is free from bias’, ‘hanging out with care in the two-sided values of the online world’, and ‘redefining disability as a symbol of positivity through Internet solidarity’. Over time and space, the structure of the experiences by persons with muscular dystrophy was leading to the following sequence: ‘alienated due to disability off-line’, ‘experiencing humane treatment, communication and empathy while acting anonymously online’, ‘second alienation after the disability is revealed off-line’, ‘escape to online community solidarity for protection’, and ‘new meaning for disabilities through insight online’. Based on the results of the study, the conclusion added discussions and suggestions for improving the daily life and social relations of persons with muscular dystrophy by way of internet use.
