왜 시각적 사고(visual thinking)인가? - 문화인지적 관점에서의 고찰 -

국문 초록

현대 학문의 논리적 사고에 대한 일방적 강조는 비언적 경험에 관련된 인지의 측면을 등한시하는 결과를 초래하게 되었고, 이는 세계에 대한 우리의 이해와 경험의 폭을 제한하고 있다는 견해들이 제시되고 있다. 본 논문은 지각적으로 사고하는 인지의 한 방식으로 시각적 사고가 왜 필요한지, 다양한 삶의 영역에서 어떤 의미를 지니고 있는지 그리고 시각적 사고가 우리의 삶을 어떻게 변화시킬 수 있는지를 탐색해보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 미학이론, 지각현상학, 체화된 마음이론, 뇌신경과학적 연구 그리고 시각적 사고에 대한 기존의 논의를 살펴보았다. 이와 같은 논의로부터 시각적 사고의 중요성을 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있을 것이다: 첫째로 시각적 사고는 그동안 등한시되었던 비언어적으로 경험하는 보편적인 인지능력에 대한 이해를 증가시킬 것이다. 둘째로 시각적 사고는 창의적이고 상상력이 풍부한 사고를 향상시키는데 크게 기여할 것이다. 셋째로 시각적 사고는 문화 예술이해에 중요한 이론적 기초를 제공함으로서 문화예술이해에 기여할 것이다. 넷째로, 시각적 사고는 공감능력과 감수성을 향상시켜 학교폭력의 문제를 예방하고 치료하는 데 기여할 것이다. 다섯째, 시각적 사고는 최근에 새롭게 부상하고 있는 예술치료에 중요한 이론적 기초를 제공할 수 있을 것이다. 여섯째, 대인관계를 포함하여 심리적 건강 문제에 비언어적 경험이 중요하게 관련되어 있다는 것을 입증해 보임으로서, 건강하고 풍요로운 삶을 영위하는데 중요한 시사점을 제공할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

It is suggested that the one-sided emphasis on logical thinking brought about the result to neglect the aspect of cognition related to non-verbal experiences, which restricts the range of our understanding and experiences as to the world. This thesis attempted to explore why visual thinking is needed, what kind of meaning it has in diverse areas of life, and how visual thinking changes our life. For this purpose, we have discussed aesthetic theory, perceptual phenomenology, embodied-mind theory, neuro-scientific research and visual thinking. From such a discussion, the significance of visual thinking will be summarized as follows. First, visual thinking will increase the understanding of universal cognitive ability experienced non-verbally which was neglected in the past. Second, visual thinking will greatly contribute to the improvement of creative and imaginative thinking. Third, visual thinking will provide the theoretical basics important in understanding culture & art, and contribute to the understanding of culture & art. Fourth, visual thinking will better empathy ability and sensibility, and serve to prevent and cure the problem of school violence. Fifth, visual thinking will be able to provide the important theoretical basics in arts therapy newly emerging recently. Sixth, it will prove that non-verbal experiences are significantly related to mental health problem as well as interpersonal relation, and further it will be able to furnish the important implications to lead a healthy and affluent life.
