한국과 미국의 대학원 평생교육학 전공 프로그램 비교 연구

국문 초록

대학원 교육은 평생교육 분야의 학문 후속 세대 및 평생교육의 이론과 실천을 접목하는 지도자를 양성하는데 있어 중추적 역할을 담당한다. 본 연구에서는 한국과 미국의 대학원 평생교육 전공 프로그램의 구조 및 운영적 측면을 분석하였다. 이를 위해 한국과 미국에서 해당 전공을 대학원 석․박사 학위과정에서 제공하고 있는 대학 10개교씩 선정하였다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 한국과 미국의 대학원 평생교육 관련 전공 프로그램의 단과대학, 학과 내 개설 위치가 상이하다는 점이다. 둘째, 한국과 미국의 대학원 평생교육 관련 전공 프로그램의 명칭이 상이하다. 셋째, 미국의 경우에는 순수학문지향적 학술학위(academic degree)과정과 현장지향 전문학위(professional degree) 과정을 구분하여 운영하고 있다. 넷째, 한국과 미국의 대학원 평생교육 전공 프로그램을 운영하는데 있어 두 나라는 목표설정 측면에서 차이를 보이고 있다. 다섯째, 교육과정의 구성면에서 보았을 때 미국의 경우 개인 성인학습자 관련 교과목이 많은 반면 한국은 평생교육사 자격에서 필수 또는 선택으로 요구하는 교과목들을 중심으로 교육과 사회를 연관 지어 이해하려는 내용의 교과목들이 미국에 비해서 많다는 것이다. 이러한 결론과 논의에 따른 한국의 대학원 평생교육 전공 프로그램의 발전을 위한 시사점을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the graduate programs of lifelong education in Korea and make comparisons with the graduate programs of the United States. Total 20 universities were chosen for comparison purposes, 10 Korean and 10 American. Their program titles, program objectives, curricular, admission requirements, coursework, and degrees offered were compared and analyzed. Results from the graduate programs are indicated as follows; a) there are differences in where the programs are located within the departments and colleges or schools; b) there are differences in names of the programs; c) the programs make distinction between academic degrees and professional degrees in the United States; d) there are differences in objectives of the graduate programs between two countries; e) the Korean curriculum demonstrates in ways in which the programs focus more on core courses which are parts of the certification of the lifelong educator and the perspectives of educational sociology, while the American curriculum is considerably more individual learner-oriented than Korea. The implications of the research were discussed.
