대학생 다문화 태도에 대한 다양성 경험과 대학의 구조적 다양성 효과 분석

국문 초록

최근 우리나라 고등교육의 국제화와 더불어 대학에 다양한 국적의 외국인 교수와 학생이 많아지면서 문화적 다양성에 대한 개방적인 태도가 더욱 중요하게 되었다. 하지만 아직까지 국내에서는 관련연구가 시작단계에 있다. 따라서, 본 연구는 전국 51개 4년제 대학의 3, 4학년 재학생 6,055명으로부터수집한 데이터를 활용해서 대학생의 다양성 경험과 대학의 구조적 다양성이 대학생의 다문화 태도에미치는 영향을 실증적으로 밝혀보고자 하였다. 데이터는 자료의 특성을 고려하여 다층모형(HLM)방법으로 분석하였다. 분석결과, 대학생의 다양성 경험은 다문화 태도에 긍정적인 영향을 주었으나, 대학의 구조적 다양성은 부분적으로 부정적인 영향이 있거나 유의미한 영향이 없는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 향후 대학차원에서 학생의 다문화 태도를 개발하기 위한 방안을 마련하고자 할 때 고려해야 할 사항을 논의하였다.

영문 초록

This study investigated the impact of student’s diversity experiences and structural diversity of an institution on the multicultural attitude of college students. The sample utilized for analysis was 6,055 junior and senior students who attended a 4-year institution. The dependent variable was student’s multicultural attitude that included three dimensions: cognitive, affective, and behavioral intention. The student’s diversity experiences and the proportion of foreign students and professors were the variables of interest. The HLM method was used for the analysis. The results showed that the college student’s diversity experiences had a statistically positive effect on all dimensions of multicultural attitude. However, the structural diversity of an institution had a negative effect on the affective dimension, and had no significant effect on the cognitive and behavioral intention dimension. Based on these results, this study suggested that universities should offer more extensive programs of diversity to their students in order to enhance the multicultural attitude of undergraduate students during college. Also, this study called for a renewed approach to inbound internationalization in Korean universities.
