영문 초록

The purpose of the study was to (1) explore the system and legal changing process of public nursing education during the Japanese occupation of Korea, (2) evaluate nursing education activity of nurse’s training centers at Jahye hospitals (1910-1925) and provincial hospitals (1925-1945) at Gwangju, which can be regarded as the predecessor of the present College of Nursing Chonnam National University, and (3) re-establish the opening year of College of Nursing Chonnam National University. First, Even during the Japanese occupation of Korea, nursing education in Korea has undergone quality changes in many areas including admission standard and educational activity. The regulations for the training of nurses, which was enacted and revised by the Government-General (Choseon Chongdokbu), led to the nurture of nurses on a nationwide. Jahye hospitals at Gwangju, which were the branches of the provincial Jahye hospitals established in 1910 in Korea, began independently the training of nurses in 1912 according to their private regulations. In the next year, 1913, the Government-General (Choseon Chongdokbu) announced ‘the regulations for the training of midwives (Josanbu) and nurses (Ganhobu)’. This was regarded as the event that marks the beginning of formulating the policy for nurse’s training under the control of the Government-General. In 1914, by obtaining the licenses for nurses or midwives, the nursing profession was recognized as one of the enacted policies and played an important role in the public awareness of women’s participation in Korean society. The regulations for nurses was the first nursing relations act in Korea, which provided the guidelines on nurse’s qualifications, licenses, examinations, or sanctions against violations of laws. Second, The re-establishment of the opening year of College of Nursing Chonnam National University would be associated with the year of 1912 in which Jahye hospitals at Gwangju began independently the training of nurses and midwives according to their private training regulations. 1925 is currently regarded as the opening year of College of Nursing Chonnam National University. If we call our attention to the succession of Jahye hospitals at Gwangju from 1912, the year for centenary celebrations will be 2012. However, there has been the controversy about re-establishing the opening year of College of Nursing. It would be necessary to obtain public opinions inside and outside the school, collect evidence in detail, and provide scholarly support for the succession of Gwangju Jahye hospitals.
