미국 예비 유아교사들의 집(home)에 대한 담론 분석

국문 초록

본 연구는 미국의 한 대학의 예비 유아교사들이 갖고 있는 집(home)에 대한 규격화된 담론을 푸코의 통치성(governmentality) 개념을 적용하여 조사하였다. 집은 사회적으로 중요한 개념일 뿐만 아니라, 유아교육 과정에 다양하게 다루어지는 주제이다. 한 학기동안 수업에서 수집된 다양한 문서자료와 인터뷰를 통해 예비 유아교사들의 집(home)에 대한 담론을 질적 연구 방법을 통해 분석하였다. 연구결과 예비 유아교사들은 자신과 타인의 집을 구별하는 이중적인 관점을 갖고 있었고, 수업을 통해 예비 유아교사들은 자신들이 갖고 있는 집에 대한 정상성(normalcy)을 깨닫고 변화양상을 보였다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로, 이 연구는 예비교사의 비판적 사고 증진을 위한 정상성(normalcy)에 대한 문제제기를 제안하였고, 유아교육 현장에서 집과 관련된 교수학습 방법을 고찰하는 교사교육에 대한 시사점을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to unpack the normalized concept of home held by pre-service teachers in an early childhood education program at a university located in an urban area of the Midwestern United States. Home has long been considered an important social unit, and it is also a critical concept that is deeply embedded in the early childhood education curriculum. Employing Foucault’s notion of governmentality, this study focused on how the notion of home operates at different levels ranging from the legal definition of home down to the discourse of individual pre-service teachers. This study investigated how the discourses of home and home-lessness that pre-service teachers in an early childhood education program brought into class were problematized and were transformed over time. The study finds the initial notions of home and home-lessness held by them were stigmatized and that they were able to start to problematize the normalized societal discourses of home and home-lessness. This paper discusses how early childhood teachers and teacher educators can rethink the normalcy of home.
