국문 초록

이 글은 인간의 삶에서 불가피한 슬픔이나 고통의 원인과 위로 및 위로의 근거를 두 그리스도교 사상가인 아우구스티누스와 마이스터 에크하르트에게서 찾아보려는 시도이다. 두 사상가는 모두 ‘이해를 추구하는 신앙’이라는 모토를 공유하고 있으며, 고통과 슬픔의 원인을 가변적인 선의 상실에서 찾고 있다. 더 정확하게 말하자면 가변적인 선의 가변성을 무시하고 그것에게 최고의 가치를 부여하는 잘못된 인식과 태도에서 기인하는 것으로 보고 있다. 이러한 동일한 진단으로부터 두 사상가는 모두 고통과 슬픔의 위로를 참된 의미에서 가장 좋은 것인 신 안에서 찾는다. 그러나 ‘신안에서의 위로’를 근거짓는 피조물의 ‘신-안에-있음’의 방법과 가능성 및 한계를 이해하는 방식에서 두 사상가는 차이를 보인다. 아우구스티누스는 엄격한 의미에서의 ‘신-안에-있음’을 저 세상의 몫으로 유보하고 이 생에서는 의지의 전향을 통한 선과 슬픔을 대하는 관점의 전환을 통한 슬픔의 위로를 말하는 반면, 에크하르트는 ‘영혼 안에서의 신의 탄생’이라는 이론으로 대표되는 ‘신과-하나임’을 주장한다. 인간은 신과 하나됨을 통해서, 신과 하나인 한에서, 신과 마찬가지로 어떠한 고통이나 슬픔에도 영향을 받지 않는 완전한 치유와 위로를 경험하게 된다고 주장한다.

영문 초록

This article aims to reveal what is the cause of sorrow and pain, which seem to be unavoidable in human life, as well as their consolation and its ground, as it was understood by two Christian thinkers in the middle age, St. Augustine and Meister Eckhart. Augustine and Eckhart shared the motto of ‘faith seeking understanding’ and employed similar terminologies to express their thoughts on this theme, and agreed in the diagnose of the cause of sorrow and pain. But their arguments are quite different. Both thinkers thought that the pain and sorrow experienced in human life were mainly caused through the false understanding and evaluation of changeable and corruptible temporary goods as unchangeable, eternal good. According to them, the true consolation of sorrow, therefore, lies in turning away from the temporary, corruptible goods and converting toward the eternal good which is God. But with regard to the possibility of attaining to the inherence in God they argued differently. Augustine reserved the inherence of human person in God in the strict sense for the afterlife, although he recognized the consolation of sorrow through the conversion of will accompanied by the change of perspective in this life. Meister Eckhart, on the contrary, argued for the union with God of human being, inquantum divinus, to which he gave expression with the theory of “the birth of God in the human soul”. Through the union with God, human person, inquantum divinus, so argued Eckhart, does not suffer from sorrow and pain and can enjoy perfect consolation, as is the case with God.
