‘꽃 피우기 내기’로 구현되는 창세신화의 신화적 원리와 세계관념

국문 초록

본고는 ‘꽃 피우기’로 구현되는 창세신화의 신화적 논리와 세계관념을 고찰하고자 시도되었다. 본고의 논의대상인 <천지왕본풀이>는 우리나라 전역에서 그 존재가 확인되는 창세신화의 한 유형이며, 천지개벽, 일월조정, 인세차지를 비롯한 다양한 화소들로 이루어져 있다. ‘인세차지’ 내기의 세부항목은 유형에 따라 차이가 있지만 ‘꽃 피우기’가 인세차지 내기에서 핵심적 역할을 수행하고 있다는 사실은 공통된다. 꽃 피우기 내기의 핵심은 우열과 승패가 아닌, 역할의 다름을 보여주는 것으로 파악된다. 경합자인 대별왕과 소별왕은 각기 꽃 ‘피우기’와 ‘바꾸기’를 행함으로써 ‘생명현상의 창조와 생산능력 vs 생명현상의 운용과 활용능력’을 발휘한다. 이는 ‘생명의 근원성 vs 생명의 현상성’을 표상할 뿐 아니라 그들이 각기 관장하는 저승과 이승이라는 세계영역과도 연관된다. 두 인물이 보여주는 직능의 ‘다름’과 ‘쌍둥이’라는 속성은 서사내부에서 구조적으로 작동하면서 또다른 신화적 의미망을 생성하게 되는데, 각각의 ‘다름’이 상호보완적으로 작용함으로써 전체성을 구현하기 때문이다. 꽃은 식물의 정수(精髓)로서 생명의 현상성을 표상한다. 소별왕의 검뉴울꽃(시든꽃)이 생명의 유한성을 대변한다면, 대별왕의 번성꽃은 (죽음을 거쳐 재생하는) 생명현상의 극성(極盛)을 대변한다. 따라서 소별왕의 꽃 ‘바꾸기’는 생명현상의 ‘교체(交替)’로서(인세에) 생명력을 보강하여 갱신시키는 신화적 행위에 다름 아니다. 이처럼 죽었다가 다시 피어나 열매를 맺고, 또 다시 피어나는 식물적 삶과 죽음의 반복은 ‘죽음에서 생명으로’라는 인류의 근원적인 열망을 재현하고 있으며, 이러한 상징체계는 우리 무속적 세계관념의 기반을 형성하고 있다. 아울러 꽃 피우기 내기에서 발휘된 ‘생명현상의 창조적 생산성’과 ‘생명현상의 활용’이라는 양대 특징은 꽃과 관련한 신화적 상징체계를 이해하는데 중요한 기준을 제시하고 있다. 이러한 사실은 <천지왕본풀이>의 원형 신화로서의 위상을 재확인시켜준다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the mythological principles and world view of the Creation Myth portrayed in Flowering Betting . which is the focus of this study, is found as a creation myth all over Korea and has a variety of story elements, including The beginning of the world , Modifying the Sun and the Moon . and Betting for the Human world . The details of Betting for the Human world vary in the different versions of the myth. However, Flowering Betting plays a key role in Betting for the Human World . The purpose of the flowering is not to choose a winner but to show the differences in the roles of the players. The contestants, King Daebyeol and King Sobyeol, show their respective capabilities of life creation and life keeping by flowering and flower changing. This represents the origin of life vs the actuality of life and connects the two worlds, the other world and this world, that they respectively rule. The difference between the two characters who are twins, creates a semantic network of mythology. and shapes the total story through their complementarity. Flowers are the essence of plants and represent the actuality of life. While King Sobyeol s Geomnewul flower (withered flower) represents the finiteness of life, King Daebyeol s Beonsung flower (reviving flower) represents the blossoming of life. Thus, the changing flowers of King Sobyeol are nothing other than the mythological behavior that enhances and revives the life energy of the human world by exchange. The life cycle of death, revival, and fruition of plants represents mankind s aspiration for life from death. This symbolic system is based on our shamanistic world view. Moreover, the creative productivity of life and using life energy shown in the Flowering Betting provide some valuable clues to understanding the symbolic system of this mythology in relation to flowers. This reaffirms the status of the as an archetypal myth.
