‘기억의 외주화’ 시대: 의미와 과제

국문 초록

정보를 자신의 머릿속에 직접 기억하는 대신, 외부의 도구를 이용하여 필요할 때 검색하거 나 접속하여 활용하는 ‘기억의 외주화(memory outsourcing)’ 상황이 일반화된 시대이다. 본 연구 는 이러한 ‘기억의 외주화’가 지니는 의미와 과제를 포괄적으로 분석해보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 인간의 기억과 데이터베이스의 차별적 특성을 고찰하고, ‘확장된 인지(extended cognition)’ 및 ‘분산된 인지(distributed cognition)’ 등의 개념을 중심으로 관련 이론을 탐색하였다. 아울러 그 논의를 기초로, 교육의 맥락에서 특히 주목해야 할 측면을 ‘주체적 문제의식’, ‘구 조의 포착과 변형’, ‘과정적 체험의 향유’ 등을 중심으로 분석하였다. 이러한 논의는 기억의 외주화 상황이 제공해 준 축복을 조명해내는 일임과 동시에, 우리에게 여전히 남겨진 과제, 즉 외주화가 어려운 인간 고유의 인지적 작용이 무엇인지를 파악한다는 의의를 지니고 있다.

영문 초록

The advent of the internet, with sophisticated algorithmic search engines, has made accessing information as easy as lifting a finger. Nowadays most people are relying on external tools or digital devices to store information instead of memorizing in their brains. It is called ‘memory outsourcing’. This study attempts to analyze the meaning and implications of ‘memory outsourcing’ in a comprehensive way. To do this, firstly, I examine the different characteristics of human memory and database or external artifacts, and explore related theories about human cognition mainly with ‘extended cognition’ and ‘distributed cognition’. In addition, this study discusses its implications on the educational context focusing on three aspects such as ‘subjective problem-finding’, ‘comprehension and transformation of the structure’ and ‘enjoyment of process experience’. This study intends to explore the blessings provided by the outsourcing of memory, and at the same time, identify what is still left for us, that is, the cognitive function inherent in human beings which is difficult to outsource.
