Frida Kahlo(1907-1954) is a painter who went through self-realization as an artist by overcoming his mental and physical pain by projecting his traumatic experiences on her artistic
expression. The self-portraits that constitute most of her works realistically and symbolically
shape the images regarding the mankind’s dilemma subjects on death and pain.
The purpose of this paper analyzes the self-portraits of Frida Kahlo by depending on the
discussions made by Freud and Jung who have recognized the psychotherapeutical effects of
paintings. This paper further studies the process of self-healing, the meaning of the symbols,
and color psychology portrayed in her paintings. This is to look into Frida Kahlo’s work and
life, how she overcame the physical and psychical suffering, the fear from death, and to figure
out the process of his psychological recovery and rehabilitation.
The mental distress or the trauma that Frida Kahlo suffered from refers to a phenomenon
where the person loses the defense and protection mechanisms due to a severe and terrible
experience. The artist portrayed her traumatic experiences and unspeakable pain on her
self-portraits, which has allowed her to escape from the threatening trauma. Furthermore, she
was able to open up the path for communicating with the world through her paintings, which
had allowed her to prevent alienation and separation caused by diseases and disorder.
As a conclusion, the self-portraits as a form of creative art had served as the cause for her
to acquire a new identity through self-analysis, the traumatic stress was pacified through the
chatharsis and sublimation to lead to the recovery of a psychological balance, and bringing about an inner change and transformation by combining the disrupted identity has brought the
opportunity for healing and communication.
