국문 초록

예술작품은 화가의 자화상이며 일종의 심리적인 고백이다. 작품을 통하여 자신와 내면세계를 투사하고 선과 색채라는 조형언어를 통해서 자신도 모르는 무의식의 억압된 세계를 표출한다. 20세기 미술에 있어서 에드바르드 뭉크는(1863-1944) 노르웨이가 낳은 가장 위대한 화가로 사랑, 고통, 불안, 죽음 등을 주제로 인간의 어두운 내면을 표현한 독창적인 예술가로서 미술사의 흐름에 하나의 전환점을 제시하였다. 19세기 인상파나 자연주의가 빛, 기쁨 등의 밝음에 초점을 두었다면 그의 예술은 내면세계의 어둠에 주목했다. 극적인 주제, 단순화된 형태, 강렬한 색채를 통해 대상의 충실한 묘사가 아년 주관적이고도 독창적인 예술세계를 이뤄 고갱, 고호, 앵소르, 호들러와 함께 표현주의(Expressiorllsm)의 선구자로 평가되고 있다(신을연, 1999).

영문 초록

The aim of this study is to analyze the symbolic image of death and anxiety in the works of Edward Munch. He served as a pioneer of expressionist painting by making abstruse human psychology expressed in his own way through his own experiences and the theme of non-painting that had never been exposed to imagination in the situation of that age. Munch\'works began with the tragic death of a family that took place during his childhood. Such targic death remained alive in his life-long memory and thus became the dominant factor of his works. The failure in love Munch suffered through his growth, the obsession he had on the death of man, the series of inner conflict from his mental uneasinessall of them appear concretely in his works of art, specially in his self-portrait. The expressionless front view of his self-portraits and the person which he drew all his life shows that the visual expression of his mental state fuIl of anguish was his important theme. These individual experiences were sublimated into many works such as series of ‘The Frieze of Life.\' The most important thing of Munch works is what is the theme. Wl1en he was in Saint Cloud in 1889, he wrote in his diary. “What I draw musl be the human being who has breath, feelings, sufferings, love, and must be alive.\' This desire of expression shows that his works are expressive and symbolical. To express his inner the world, he destroyed tbe important of the extemal forms of objects, distorted and simplified thc shapes with subjective preconception and tbus stimulated instinct with rough color and lines. Munch had overcome his sufferings by arts and tried to spread out aesthetics empathically communicating them just as they were. Ilis subjective and originative presentation of human souls made a turning point in the history of fine arts which was continued to the expressionism in Germany.
