학생 요구 분석을 근거로 한 영어 수준별 영어전용강의 효과성 증진 방안

국문 초록

본 연구는 최근 대학 국제화의 추세에 따라 확대 시행 중에 있는 영어전용강의의 효과성을 높일 수 있는 개선책을 모색하기위한 목적으로, 영어전용강의를 수강하는 학생들이 요구하는 개선방안의 정도를 설문조사하여 영어 수준별로 분석한 것이다. 효과적인 영어강의를 위한 개선점으로 행정지원, 교수방법, 교수자 영어실력 등 5개 범주 총 15개 항목을 선정하였고, 이에 대한 현재 수준과 필요수준을 학생들에게 응답하게 하였다. 분석 방법으로 두 수준에 대한 차이 검정인 t 검정과 Borich 요구도 값을 활용하였고, 학생들이 요구하는 개선방안을 영어수준별로 탐색했다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 대부분의 학생들이 영어능력향상을 위해 영어전용강의를 수강하는 것으로 나타났으며, 둘째, 영어수준이 높을수록 영어전용강의의 효과성을 높게 인식하고, 만족도 역시 높은 것으로 드러났다. 셋째, 학생들이 요구하는 영어전용강의 수업 방식은 영어수준에 따라 차이가 있었다. 특히, 영어수준이 낮은 학생들은 영어만으로 진행되는 영어전용강의를 수강하기 어려워하며, 한국어 병행사용을 요구하는것으로 나타났다. 결론적으로 영어전용강의의 효율성과 효과성을 높이기 위해서는 수강생들의 영어수준을 고려하여 차별화된 강의 운영이 필수적인 것으로 판단된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to find out ways to improve the effectiveness of English Medium Instruction(EMI) in the university in Korea, based on the questionnaires of college students' needs. For this, we analysed the results of a total of 103 students taking the EMI class, in different groups, depending on their levels of English competence. In the questionnaire, 15 subjects, including the administrative support at the college, instructors' teaching methods, and instructors' English competence are evaluated as potential areas of improvement. Additionally, students are asked to indicate the present levels and expected levels for each of 15 subject matters. We used the t-test and Borich-value as difference tests between two levels. The results of this analysis are as follows: First, most students take EMI to improve their English proficiency rather than its subject or major-related content. Second, the higher the English level the students are at, the more they are aware of the effectiveness of EMI and satisfied with the class. Third, the students liked the different teaching methods depending on their levels of English proficiency. Specially, the students in the ‘low’ levels tend to demand bilingual language use in class, having difficulties in taking ‘English-only’ classes. In conclusion, to enhance the efficiency and the effectiveness of EMI, differentiated classes depending on the students' level of English proficiency are required.
