일반 고등학교 내 대안교실의 교육적 가능성과 한계

국문 초록

이 연구는 하위 성적 학생들이 다수인 민주고(가명)에서 “학교부적응”학생들을 대상으로 실시한 학교 내 대안교실 사례를 탐구했다. 민주고는 학생들의 학교부적응 문제가 고교 다 양화와 고교 선택제 정책이후 더욱 심각해졌지만, 이들에게 좀 더 의미 있는 교육을 하는 것이 학교의 할 일이라고 생각했다. 이 학교는 오랜 논의와 여러 시도 끝에 전일제 학교 내 대안교실을 운영하기로 결정했다. 교사들이 학생들을 추천하고, 상담교사와 대안담임이 학생 들과 상담하면서 학생과 학부모의 동의를 얻고 학급을 구성하였다. 운영결과, 학생, 학부모 그리고 교사들의 반응은 긍정적이었다. 이 결과는 다음과 같은 시사점을 갖는다. 첫째, 학교 부적응 학생들을 대상으로 한 별도 학급 구성에서 오는 낙인 문제는 어떤 교육을 어떻게 시 키는가에 따라서 다르다. 둘째, “부적응” 학생들의 교육에서 교사와 학생 간의 신뢰와 애착 관계가 매우 중요하다. 셋째, 가정의 보살핌을 받기 어려운 취약집단학생들의 사회적 도덕적 성장은 호네트의 이론이 간과한 것과 달리, 책임 있는 교육기관의 교사들과 또래와의 긍정 적인 애착관계를 통해서 의미 있게 성장할 수 있다. 넷째, “학교부적응” 학생들 역시 자신들 의 능력과 가치를 사회적으로 인정받을 수 있는 배움을 갈구한다. 마지막으로, 학교 내 대안 교실은 고교 정상화가 되기 전까지 한시적으로 운영될 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

This paper investigates an alternative class in a general highschool. The data were collected by a qualitative method. The alternative class consisted of “trouble makers” who often cut school, slept in class, or interrupt class. The teachers in Minju Highschool decided to provide more meaningful and fun educational programs so that they would not feel left out but cared in school. This educational attempt was successful. The students came to study harder, better behaved, and more seriously prepared for their future career, comparing with themselves in the past. This result has a number of practical and theoretical implications. First, running a separate class for “trouble makers” does not always bring about a stigma problem. It depends on under what circumstance it runs. Second, students' social and moral consciousness is not improved by just reasonal reflection but rather by feeling of their guilty and regret that might hurt teachers and peers who care them. Thus it is important to have trust and affection between teachers and students, and within peer students to improve students' social and moral ability. In Honnett' theory, confidence and self esteem are assumed to be raised by good caring in family and legal inclusion. However this study shows that it is to large extent complemented by good and responsible education. Third, “trouble makers” also have a strong desire for improving their capacity and social recognition. Finally, in spite of this accomplishment, an alternative class is worthy of temporal implementation until educational normalization is realized in the ways that every student receives proper schooling based on her/his own need and interest.
