일제강점기 중등학생의 일기를 통해 본 식민교육

국문 초록

이 연구는 일제강점기 중등학생의 일기장 분석을 중심으로 하여 당시 학교에서 학생들의 일기쓰기 활동과 의미를 알아보고, 일기장에 기록된 당시 학교교육의 모습이 지닌 특징을 밝히고자 하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학생들의 일기쓰기는 황국신민화교육의 특성이 강하였다. 당시 학생들이 사용한 일기장은 황국신민교육의 핵심 내용이 인쇄된 규격 화된 일기장이었으며, 지배민족의 언어인 일본어로 일기를 쓰게 하였고, 학생들의 사상 감시 와 지도의 목적으로 정기적인 검열이 이루어졌다. 둘째, 학생이 기록한 일기에 반영된 학교 교육은 유사 종교적 황국신민화 교육과 유사 군대식 병사 교육의 특성이 강하였다. 천황제 의 국체 관념과 천황에 대한 충성을 강조하였으며, 천황을 신과 같은 존재로 간주하고, 천황 의 말과 글을 경전처럼 외게 하고, 천황을 모신 조선신궁에서 종교와 같은 의식을 거행하였 다는 점에서 종교와 유사한 면이 있었다. 한편 학교를 병영화하고 학생들을 군인처럼 교육 하였는데, 교련이 매우 강조되었고, 전쟁무기 헌납식에 학생들을 동원하고 군대 및 전쟁 관 련 행사를 학교 행사로 거행하였으며, 교사들의 출정 환송, 참전 장병 위문방문, 위문편지쓰 기 등에 학생들을 동원하였다.

영문 초록

This study is to investigate the practice and meaning of diary writing through analyzing a student’s diary under Japanese colonial rule and reveal the characteristics of school education on the diary. First, students’diary writing related to the education of recreating the imperial subject. The Gyeonggi secondary school student’diary has the standardized form with key contents of colonial education. School authorities made the students write diary in Japanese. School teachers examined the students’ diaries regularly. Second, school education on the diary had the characteristics of recreating the imperial subject on the basis of qusi-religion and training the students like soldiers. National identity and loyalty for the Emperor were emphasized. There were some similarities between Japanese imperial education and religion. The Emperor was regarded as God. School authorities made the students memorize the Emperors’speaking and writings such as Bible. There were ceremonies such as religious rites in the Chosen shrine. Meanwhile, Japanese imperials operated the school like military and trained the students like soldiers. Military drill was emphasized. Students were mobilized for weapon dedications. consolation visits, and military ceremonies.
