대학 전공 선택: 성별 및 가족배경 요인 검증

국문 초록

이 연구는 성별 및 가족배경 요인이 대학 전공 선택에 미치는 영향을 한국청소년패널조사 자료와 대졸자 직업이동 경로조사를 이용하여 분석하였다. 먼저 기대수입이 높은 전공 진입 에 대한 분석에서 남성이 여성보다 수익률이 높은 전공을 선택할 가능성이 높게 나타났으며 부의 직업이나 교육의 영향력은 다른 요인들을 통제한 상태에서 통계적으로 유의미하지 않 았다. 하지만 대학별 평균수능점수로 가늠한 상위권 대학의 수익률이 높은 전공분야에 진입 할 가능성에 대해서는 부의 교육이 다른 요인을 통제한 상태에서도 통계적으로 유의미한 영 향력을 보여주었다. 이와 함께 학업성취도가 수익률이 높은 전공분야에 진입하는데 있어서 가장 핵심적인 요인으로 나타났다. 다음으로 전공계열 선택에 대한 분석결과에서는 남성이 여성보다 공학계열에 진입할 가능 성이 높게 나타났으며 부의 사회경제적 지위가 높거나 교육수준이 높을수록 공학계열보다는 인문계열에 진입할 가능성이 높았다. 고등학교 성적의 영향은 과목별로 상이한데 과학이나 수학 성적이 높을수록 다른 계열보다는 공학계열에 진입할 가능성이 높은 반면 국어나 영어 성적이 우수한 학생은 공학계열보다는 인문계열에 진입할 확률이 높았다. 전공별 기대수입 역시 전공계열 선택에 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This study examines gender differences and socioeconomic effects on Korean undergraduates’ major selection using the data from the Korean Youth Panel Survey and the Graduates Occupational Mobility Survey. Influences of sociological variables on decisions of matriculates are statistically estimated considering economical and psychological variables: expected income, academic achievement, and career maturity. The result suggests that college major selection is largely affected by the respondents’ gender. Male students major in more lucrative study field compared to female students, and the possibility of female students specializing in engineering fields are lower than that of male students. Furthermore, matriculates whose parents are of higher educational level are more likely to enter into lucrative study fields at selective universities, and prefer human science fields to engineering fields. Academic achievement in high school is also a decisive predictor of college major selection, whereas regression coefficients of expected income and career maturity are only partially significant; Students whose high school scores in Math and Science are high tend to specialize in engineering fields rather other fields while those whose scores in Korean language and English language are high are more inclined to choose human science fields.
