미등록 이주 노동자들의 초국적 가족 형성과 경계적 정체성

국문 초록

이 연구는 국내 미등록 이주 노동자들의 가족적 삶, 자녀양육, 교육문제를 심층적으로 이 해하고, 초국적 이주 시대의 한국 현실에 대한 성찰을 통해 정책적 시사점을 도출하고자 수 행되었다. 이를 위하여 D시에 거주하는 국내 미등록 이주 노동자 여섯 가족의 자녀양육과 교육 내러티브를 초국적 가족과 경계적 정체성을 중심으로 분석하여 연구결과를 논의하였다. 글로벌 위계의 가장 낮은 단계에 해당되는 국내 미등록 이주 노동자들의 초국적 가족은 세 계화시대의 적극적인 선택의 결과라기보다는 국민국가의 통제 속에서 강요된 이산의 형태로 형성되면서 자녀양육과 교육에서 위험 국면에 노출되어 있음을 보여주고 있다. 또한 이들이 직면해 있는 현실적 조건으로 인해 갖게 된 이주지와 본국 어디에도 속하지 못한 채 부유하 는 성격의 경계적 정체성은 자녀교육과 기획에 장애 요인으로 작용하고 있음을 드러내주고 있다. 이러한 연구결과에 기반하여 ‘다문화 한국 실현’을 모토로 내건 우리 사회에 주는 정 책적 시사점을 논의하였다.

영문 초록

This qualitative study attempts to provide an in-depth understanding of family life, child-rearing, and educational concerns of undocumented immigrant workers and draw policy implications based on a reflection on the realities of Korean society in the era of transnational immigration. Toward this end, it analyzes the child-rearing and educational narratives of six undocumented immigrant worker families living in the city of D with focus on transnational family and border-crossing identity. The transnational families of undocumented immigrant workers in Korea occupy the lowest rung of global society, and are not the result of deliberate decision-making on the part of the families in this era of globalization, but are the result of regulations imposed by the nation state, which lead to families being separated and finding themselves in a precarious position in raising and educating their children. Also, their border-crossing identity, which is the result of the high mobility demanded by work and their separation from any established community in their home country, act as an obstacle in their child's education. Based on the findings, this article presents policy implications for Korea, which has taken up the motto of “Multicultural Korea.”
