Giroux의 학교교육 기업화에 대한 비판적 논의와 그 한계

국문 초록

Giroux는 학교교육이 모든 학생들에게 이익이 되어야 하고 사회의 민주적인 영역의 핵심으로 여 겨져야 하는 민주적인 공공 영역임에도 불구하고 그 가치가 훼손되고 있는 것은 기업적 가치의 영 향 때문이라는 기본적인 인식을 지니고 있다. 이 연구는 이러한 Giroux의 인식에 대한 핵심적인 논 거를 ‘신자유주의와 기업화되고 있는 학교교육’으로 설정하여 다음의 세 가지 연구 문제 형태에서 수행되고 있다. 첫째, 신자유주의에 따른 민주적인 사회 조건의 쇠퇴에 대하여 Giroux의 진단을 기 술한다. 둘째, 학교교육이 기업적 가치로부터 받는 영향에 대하여 Giroux의 분석을 제시한다. 셋째, Giroux의 논의 내용에 대한 몇 가지 한계점을 제시한다. Giroux는 숙고적이고 참여적인 시민을 창출하기 위한 조건으로서 비판적 교육, 공적인 도덕성, 시민의 책임 등이 재정적 자본의 이해관계와 이윤 창출의 논리에 의하여 희생되고 있음을 지적하면 서, 이윤 추구가 민주주의의 본질이라는 신념을 경계하고 있다. 그리고 이런 맥락에서 Giroux는 학 교교육에 대한 기업적 가치의 부정적인 영향을 ‘모든 학생들에게 이익이 되는 공적인 이익에서 투 자자의 이익을 확대시키기 위하여, 소비자로서 학생들을 교육시키기 위하여, 새로운 세계적 시장의 저임금 직업에 적응시키기 위하여’ 고안된 사적인 이익으로 학교교육을 변화시키려는 시도라고 가 정하고 있다. 그에게서 이러한 기업적 가치의 영향은 비판과 저항의 대상이 되며, 이는 민주적인 형 태의 정치 행위와 실질적인 민주적 사회 질서를 지지하는 대안적인 학교교육의 비전이 필요함을 의 미한다. 이를 위하여 학교교육이 단순히 ‘비용-효과’라는 경제적 효율성의 문제로 축소될 수 없다는 요건이 선행되어야 한다. 이처럼 Giroux의 논의가 학교교육에 대한 중요한 시사점을 제공할지라도, 그의 논의가 지닌 한계점을 간과할 수는 없다. Giroux는 사적인 자유, 경쟁 강화, 기업적 이해관계 등을 논의하면서 지금의 학교교육 속에 기업적인 가치와 민주적인 가치가 공존하고 있음을 고려하 지 않고 있다. 이로 인하여 학교교육의 위기에 대한 Giroux의 진단이 과연 얼마만큼의 설득적이고 실천적 힘을 지닐 수 있는지에 대하여 회의적인 의구심을 갖게 하는 것도 사실이다.

영문 초록

Giroux held that schooling, which should be in the benefit of all students and should be considered as a democratic public sphere at the core of democracy, is losing its purpose due to the influence of corporate values. This study set up Giroux's central subjects for argument as neoliberalism and the corporatization of schooling, and was conducted in the form of the following three research questions: ① How does Giroux explain neoliberalism regarding the decline of the democratic condition? ② How does Giroux diagnose the crisis of schooling by the corporate values? ③ What are the limits of Giroux's arguments? According to the study, Giroux offers the following: When a society is defined through the values of neoliberalism, critical education, public morality, and civic responsibility as conditions for creating thoughtful and engaged citizens are sacrificed all too willingly to the interest of financial capital and the logic of profit-making. Educators supporting a democracy should warn low-grade faith like “A profit chase is a substantive democracy. A democracy is same as capitalism.” In this context, Giroux presumes the negative effects of corporate values on the schooling as the following: the attempt to transform schooling from a public good, benefiting all students, to a private good designed to expand the profits of investors, educate students as consumers, train students for the low-paying jobs of the new global marketplace. Moreover, the effects of corporate values are resisted by Giroux. In other words, educators concerned about democratic public life should provide an alternative vision of schooling that supports democratic forms of political agency and a substantive democratic social order. But Giroux's arguments have several limits. Especially, Giroux is not considering that democratic values exist alongside corporate values in the current schooling. Therefore, it is questionable how persuasive and practical Giroux's diagnosis of the crisis of school
