남한강유역 구석기 조사의 전개와 전망

국문 초록

본 연구는 남한강유역 구석기 조사의 전개 과정을 통해 주요 성과를 정리한 후 전망을 제시하였다. 남한강유역 구석기 조사의 전개는 개시기－성장기－확산기－정체기로 구분될 수 있다. 개시기(1980년대 이전)는 공주 석장리 조사 이후 새로운 구석기 유적의 발견에 집중하였고, 제천 점말 용굴에 대한 조사가 이루어진다. 성장기(1980~90년대 말)에는 충주댐 수몰지구에 대한 조사를 바탕으로 우리나라 구석기문화의 양상을 동북아시아 더 나아가 세계 구석기 연구의 흐름에서 개략적으로 파악할 수 있게 된다. 확산기(1990년대 말~2000년대 말)는 광역 지표조사를 통해 남한강유역 구석기의 분포를 비교적 구체적으로 파악하게 되며, 여러 곳에서 이루어진 발굴조사를 통해 구석기시대 전반에 걸친 석기공작의 양상을 파악할 수 있게 된다. 정체기(2000년대 말부터 현재)에는 여러 유적이 조사되지만, 수준의 저하가 서서히 나타난다. 이 지역에서 구석기 조사의 전망은 대학 내 연구자의 부재, 대학의 구제발굴 제한, 전문조사법인의 급속한 증가와 밀접하게 관련되어 있다. 성장기까지만 하더라도 대학을 중심으로 활발한 조사가 이루어졌지만, 현재는 연구자 감소에 따라 거의 사라진 상태이다. 한편 최근에는 대학의 구제발굴 제한이라는 틀 속에서 구석기 조사를 진행할 수 있는 여건은 더욱 마련되기 어렵다. 그러므로 앞으로 구석기 조사는 전문조사법인에 의존하게 될 것으로 판단된다. 성장기부터 등장한 전문조사법인은 설립 초창기에는 구석기 조사에 큰 획을 긋기도 하였지만, 최근 고고학 조사 환경의 변화로 말미암아 여러 문제에 봉착하고 있다. 이러한 구석기고고학의 위기를 극복하기 위한 다양한 논의가 관계기관(자) 사이에서 적극적으로 이루어지길 기대한다.

영문 초록

This study was conducted to summarize the achievements in the archaeological surveys of the history of the paleolithic in the Namhan River basin, and to call for the attention from researchers regarding the future prospect that it presents. The history of archaeological surveys of the paleolithic in Namhan River basin can be categorized into opening stage-growing stage-spreading stage-stagnant stage. The opening stage (before 1980s), the focus was on the discovery of new paleolithic sites under the situation that was encouraged following the survey of Seokjang-ni in Gongju, and surveys in Jeonmal Cave was conducted. The growing stage (1980s~late 90s), based on the survey on submerged districts in Chungju Dam, the aspects of the paleolithic culture of Korea was examined roughly in the aspect of the stream of paleolithic research in Northeast Asia, and furthermore the world. The spreading stage (late 1990s~late 2000s), the paleolithic distribution of Namhan River basin was examined relatively more in details through the surface survey of the region, and the aspect of stone industry throughout the paleolithic was comprehended through the excavations that took place in different areas. The stagnant stage (from late 2000s), many sites surveyed in the area where the survey has not been conducted yet, but survey a lowering of standards is gradual. The prospect of the paleolithic surveys in this area is closely related to the absence of researcher in the university, university’s restrictions in rescue excavation, and rapid increase of professional corporations. Surveys have been active among universities until the growing stage, but they have almost disappeared due to the absence of researchers now. Meanwhile, within the restrictions in rescue excavation set by the universities, it is more difficult to continue the paleolithic surveys. Therefore, the paleolithic surveys will be dependent on professional corporations from now on.Professional corporations, which started to appear since the growing stage, made a huge contribution to the paleolithic surveys in the early stage of their establishment, but the possibility of problems now due to changes in archeological surveys environment. Discussions should take place more actively in the future in order to overcome such limitations.
