Seoul Mates : A music preference comparison between Korean college students in the US and Korea

국문 초록

현대사회에서 세계의 많은 사람은 여러나라에 흩어져 디아스포라적 삶을 살고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 음악교육이 한국인으로서의 정체성 형성에 어떻게 작용하는 지를 알아보고자 미국이민 한 국가정 대학생과 한국거주 한국가정 대학생의 한국 음악선호를 비교하고 한국음악에 대한 그들의 인식을 알아보는 것이다. 연구방법으로 한국거주 대학생 200명과 미국이민 한국 대학생 10명을 대상으로 이들이 가정, 학교, 지역공동체에서 경험하고 선호하는 한국의 음악과 이에 대한 인식 그리고 자기정체성과의 관련에 대해 설문조사 및 면접을 실시하였다. 연구결과, 연구대상 모두 거주 지역과 상관없이 아리랑, 가야금과 장구를 선호하였으며 미국거주 한국가정에서는 한국음악이 생일이나 결혼식 등의 가족행사에 전혀 사용되지 않는다고 응답한 반면 한국가정에서는 흔히 사용되고 있음이 밝혀졌다. 미국에서는 지역의 한국방송이 한국음악의 주된 제공처이지만 한국에서는 방송과 인터넷, 식당, 길거리 음악 등 일상생활에서 접하는 모든 음악적 비음악적 환경이 한국 음악의 제공처로 밝혀졌다. 또한 한국대학생은 개인의 음악선호와 무관하게 한국의 음악은 한국인으로서 알아야하고 교육되어질 필요가 있다고 인식했다. 이는 우리나라 음악이 공간을 초월하여 한국은 물론 한국인이 거주하는 여러나라의 음악교과에 필요한 교육내용이라는 점을 시사한다.

영문 초록

As music travels across the Pacific Rim, Korean music is part of the cultural identity of Koreans at home country of Korea and around the world. Combining these issues of musical identity across diasporas with the impact of cultural identity in music education is the goal of this study. Do students have different attitudes toward their music depending on whether they are at home country or abroad? Do these cultural emblems become more important when they are away? How do these preferences impact music curriculum? To explore how music shapes national identities, this study surveyed music preferences among Korean-American college students in the United States and Korean college students in Korea. The joint study by music education researchers in both Korea and the United states provides an excellent opportunity to compare the music identities in two college music groups. Music educators have called for new approaches to multicultural understanding through music that includes a global repertoire. This paper discusses the influence of global popular and traditional music repertoire on music preferences for students from diverse music diasporas.
