영문 초록

Many previous studies suggested that serotonin is a important CNS metabolite which play a major role in sleep-wakefulness cycle. For the evaluating of relation between the serotonin and the sleep, the authors estimated the serotonin level in platelet poor plasma(PPP) and platelet. Platelet is known as a peripheral model of CNS cell. Thus, in this study, the platelet serotonin level is estimated as indirect indicator of CNS serotonin level. PPP and platelet serotonin levels were estimated in 41 insomnia patients and 25 controls. After a minimum of seven days, during which subjects were free from drug and serotonin contained food, blood were drawn at 9AM and 9PM. The results were as follows : 1) PPP and platelet serotonin levels were not significantly different between AM and PM values, and there were no circadian rhythmicity. 2) PPP and platelet serotonin levels showed small variation at different times of a day within an individual, but there were large interindividual variation. 3) PPP and platelet serotonin levels were not statistically significantly different between males and females, but they tended to be lower in females. 4) PPP serotonin level was not significantly different between insomnia patients and controls, but platelet serotonin level was significantly lower in insomnia patients than in controls. 5) There was no positive correlation between PPP serotonin level and platelet serotonin level
