The purpose of this study is to examine the "Web-media characteristics of webzine" on the basis of contents organization and the actual use of interactive options in webzine. Specifically, this study investigates how web-media characteristics, represented by multi-media and hyper-media, are embodied in the communication process of webzine; that is, in the organization and expression of overall contents. This is a practical analysis of the form and the level of web-media characteristics realized in domestic webzine. For this study, a complete analysis of the relevant Internet sites was made in addition to the investigation of the corresponding literatures and data. This study provided the problems of the previous analyses and the alternative proposals to cope with those problems. This study reveals that web-media characteristics, represented by multi-media and hyper-media, are incompletely embodied in the domestic webzine. Photographs, graphics, audio sounds, and videos, which are multimedia composite factors, are rarely used. Hyper-text and Hyper-link, which provide the interactivity as hyper-media composite factors, are also limitedly used. In this sense, it is too early yet to define domestic webzine as a real multi-media or hyper-media. The concept of 'interactive design' is not yet settled in Korean webzine. they do not have the user-oriented 'metaphor.' Korean webzine do not enter the level of 'interactive structure' which carries individual information and the relations between the events to the users. The contents organization and the structure of expression stay at the level of simple 'linear structure' which forms a series of information linearly and in which searching is available only in the fixed stories. Thus, users find difficulty in searching information from a different viewpoint and understand the information only in the ways which informants determines. This study offers the web-media characteristics of domestic webzine as follows. First, domestic webzine realize limitedly the multi-media characteristics of Web as a subordination to the existing print media. Second, domestic webzine reflect, even though only in the limited level, the hyper-media factors and improves the interactivity. Third, domestic webzine do not establish the concept of 'interactive design' and do not have the user-oriented 'metaphor.' With these results, we can argue that domestic webzine remains still at the first level of John V. Pavlik's three-stage model of webzine development in the viewpoint of Web multi-media. In the terms of Web hyper-media, we can say that domestic webzine just go into the second level. And these analyses and their results suggest the following development plan of domestic webzine with the use of Web-media characteristics. First, domestic webzine should complete 'interactive design' and 'user-oriented metaphor' by an active application of Web-media characteristics. Second, domestic webzine should establish 'win-win strategy,' by an active application of Web-media characteristics, with which both users and newspaper companies win. The following concrete strategies can be provided for this purpose. 1) An activation of the community by the active application of Web-media characteristics 2) A diversification of contents business with the affiliation and the cooperation of other companies 3) A development of profit model by the contents which reflect Web-media characteristics With the lack of relevant analyses and absolute or relative standards of data interpretation, this study encountered much difficulty. In spite of this limit, this study can be a touchstone of the relevant investigation. This study suggests a further possibility for these kinds of investigation.
