『삼한습유』, 자기애의 실현과 새 시대의 도래에 대한 열망과 가능성

국문 초록

본고는 김소행의 한문소설 『삼한습유』를 분석하여, 작품의 창작동기와 목적, 후발문을 통한 당대 문인들의 인식을 규명하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 먼저, 김소행의 현실적 처지를 그의 삶과 주변 인물과의 교유를 통해 파악하였다. 기존 논의에서는 『삼한습유』의 창작동기를 현실적 처지에서 오는 울울함과 발분으로 이해하였으나 본고는 「지작기」를 통해 김소행이 자신의 능력에 대한 자신감, 『삼한습유』를 통해 ‘만물을 뒤집고 상하고금을 진동시켜 만물을 자신의 발아래 두겠다’는 포부를 드러낸 것이라고 보았다. 또한 경화거족과의 교유를 지기의 관계, 혹은 유흥으로 보았던 기존 논의와는 달리 이들의 관계를 학문적 교류라는 지적공유의 관계로 확인하면서 지기를 원했던 김소행이 부지기의 현실을 인식하는계기가 되었다는 점을 밝힐 수 있었다. 또한 본고는 후발문에도 주목하였는데, 김매순과 홍석주의 후발문을 비교하면서 당대 문인들이 김소행과 『삼한습유』를어떻게 인식하였는지 확인하고자 하였다. 홍석주는 『삼한습유』를 신랄하게 비판하면서 당대의 이데올로기에 매몰된 모습을 보인 반면, 김매순은 작품에 대한 높은 평가는 물론 김소행의 불우했던 삶과 현실을 온전히 이해하면서 김소행을 위해서라면 변론을 마다하지 않겠다는 의지를 드러낸다. 후발문에서 보여준 김매순의 평가는 홍석주와 비견되면서 당대 문인들이 새 시대를 향해 어떤 행보를 보였는지 엿볼 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This study undertakes an in-depth analysis of Kim So-haeng’s classical Chinese novel, Samhansŭbyu (三韓拾遺), with the objective of elucidating the author’s underlying creative motivations and intentions, as well as investigating contemporary literati perceptions as articulated in accompanying postscripts. Initially, this paper examines Kim So-haeng’s socio-historical context by scrutinizing his life trajectory and scholarly networks. Contrary to previous interpretations that attribute Kim’s creative impetus primarily to personal grievances and frustrations stemming from his unfavorable social position, this analysis, informed by a close reading of “Jijakgi (志作記),” contends that Kim So-haeng manifested substantial self-confidence in his literary prowess and articulated ambitious aspirations to radically transform and assert dominance over contemporary intellectual and societal norms through Samhansŭbyu. Further diverging from prior scholarship, which reduces Kim’s relationship with the Gyeonghwa aristocracy predominantly to social or recreational engagements, this paper positions these associations within a framework of intellectual discourse and scholarly collaboration. Consequently, it is argued that Kim’s acute awareness of the absence of genuine intellectual peers (bujigi) profoundly influenced his perspective on the contemporary scholarly landscape. Additionally, this study conducts a comparative textual analysis of postscripts by Kim Mae-sun and Hong Seok-ju, revealing contrasting contemporary literary evaluations of Kim So-haeng and his work. Hong Seok- ju’s critical commentary, deeply entrenched within prevailing ideological strictures, stands in sharp contrast to Kim Mae-sun’s empathetic and laudatory appraisal, which not only acknowledges the literary merit of Samhansŭbyu but also underscores a profound understanding of Kim So-haeng’s personal hardships, expressing an unequivocal resolve to advocate on his behalf. This comparative scrutiny of contemporary critiques elucidates broader shifts in literary and ideological orientations amongst the literati as they navigated toward a new intellectual epoch.
