Objectives: This study explored the clinical adaptation processes of novice dental hygienists, identified the key challenges they face, and proposed strategies for successful integration into clinical practice. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted using Colaizzi’s phenomenological method to analyze the experiences of 12 novice dental hygienists with 12-18 months of clinical experience in dental hospitals or clinics. In-depth interviews were conducted, and thematic analysis was used to identify patterns in their adaptation process, challenges, and coping strategies. Results: The adaptation process was categorized into five stages: (1) initial entry: anxiety and tension, (2) early trial and error: learning and frustration, (3) beginning of adaptation: relationship building and competency enhancement, (4) growth and internal stability: work proficiency, and (5) professional growth and goal reassessment: self-efficacy. Key challenges included discrepancies between theoretical education and clinical practice, fear of mistakes, workplace relationship difficulties, and excessive workload. Successful adaptation was facilitated through continuous learning, mentorship, teamwork, and structured job-training programs. Conclusions: Structured training, mentoring, and phased adaptation programs (e.g., at three, six, and ten months) are essential for supporting novice dental hygienists. Strengthening the link between academic training and clinical practice can improve adaptation and reduce turnover rates. Future research should assess the effectiveness of structured adaptation programs and explore long-term professional development strategies.
