국문 초록

본고는 루마니아 출신인 라두 주데(Radu JUDE) 감독의 영화《지구 종말이 오더라도 너무 기대는 말라(Nu astepta prea mult de la sfârsitul lumii)》(2023)를 분석하려는 시도이다. 이 영화는 3장으로 구성되어 있는데, 여기에는 세 가지 서사와 별도로 추가된 독립적인 에피소드가 포함된다. 본고에서는 우선 라두 주데 감독의 기존의 주요 작품을 먼저 개괄하고, 영화 《지구 종말이 오더라도 너무 기대는 말라》를 분석했다. 세부적으로 이 영화가 포함하고 있는 세 가지 서사를 살펴보았다. 첫 번째 서사인 동시대의 주인공 안젤라에 삶에 대한 부분에서는 안젤라가 거대 자본을 위해 홍보 영상을 촬영하면서 과로에 시달리는 상황을 분석했다. 이 부분에서 안젤라가 촬영하는 노동 현장의 안전사고에 대한 인터뷰 동영상은 결국 노동자들이 아닌 거대 자본의 이익에 부합한다는 것을 밝혀냈다. 두 번째 서사는 안젤라의 틱톡 영상에 대한 것이다. 동시대 루마니아 사회에서 만연한 여성 혐오에 시달리는 안젤라는 자신의 틱톡 계정에서 대머리의 중년 남자로 변신한다. 틱톡 계정에서 남성으로 변신한 안젤라는 이제 가해자의 입장에서 여성 혐오 발언을 쏟아낸다. 그녀는 이러한 방식으로 현실에서의 피해자에서 가상 공간에서의 가해자로 변신한다. 이것은 현실에서 겪은 피해와 모욕에 대해 그녀가 할 수 있는 거의 유일한 보복 수단이다. 세 번째 서사는 1981년에 루시안 브라투 감독이 연출한 영화 《안젤라는 더 나아간다》의 주인공인 또 다른 안젤라의 삶에 관한 것이다. 1981년의 안젤라의 삶은 동시대 안젤라의 삶과 크게 다를 바 없으며, 이 두 사람의 삶을 통해서 라두 주데 감독은 동시대 루마니아 사회의 문제가 과거 공산주의 시절의 현실과 교차한다는 점을 밝히고 있다. 이 영화의 마지막 서사는 인터뷰 촬영 현장을 배경으로 한다. 안젤라가 속한 회사의 경영진은 안전사고를 당한 한 노동자를 인터뷰 후보자로 결정했고, 안젤라는 그의 인터뷰를 촬영한다. 안젤라와 촬영팀은 ‘안전의 중요성’을 주제로 한 홍보 영상을 제작해야 한다. 이들은 이 홍보 영상에서 주인공으로 출연할 사람으로 1981년 영화 《안젤라는 더 나아간다》의 주인공이었던 안젤라의 아들인 오비디우를 선택한다. 이 부분은 루마니아 노동자들이 얼마나 자본에 종속된 삶을 살고 있으며, 거기에서 벗어나는 것이 현실적으로 거의 불가능한지를 알려주고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper attempts to analyze the film Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World (2023) by Romanian director Radu Jude. The film consists of three chapters, which include three narratives and additional independent episode. This paper first provides an overview of director Radu Jude’s previous major works, and then analyzes the film Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World. In detail, the three narratives included in the film are examined. The first narrative, which is about the life of the contemporary protagonist Angela, mainly focuses on Angela’s overwork while filming promotional videos for large corporations. Here, the author reveals that the interview videos Angela films about safety accidents at workplaces ultimately serve the interests of large corporations, not the workers. The second narrative is about Angela’s TikTok videos. Angela, who suffers from the misogyny rampant in contemporary Romanian society, transforms into a bald middle-aged man on her TikTok account. Now transformed into a man on her TikTok account, Angela spews misogynistic comments from the position of the perpetrator. In this way, she transforms from a victim in reality to a perpetrator in virtual space. This is almost the only way she can retaliate against the harm and insult she has suffered in reality. The third narrative is about the life of another Angela, the protagonist of the 1981 film Angela Goes on. Angela’s life in 1981 is not very different from that of contemporary Angela, and through these two lives, director Radu Jude reveals that the problems of contemporary Romanian society intersect with the reality of the communist past. The final narrative of the film is about the scene where the management of Angela’s company is filming an interview with the candidate she has finally chosen. Having chosen the interviewee, Angela and the film crew must produce a promotional video on the topic of “the importance of safety.” They chose Ovidiu, the son of Angela, the protagonist of the 1981 film, to be the main character in this promotional video. Here, I will show how the filming of the promotional video reveals how dependent the lives of Romanian workers are on capital and how it is practically impossible to escape from it.
