국문 초록

본 논문은 도스토옙스키의 데뷔 작품 『가난한 사람들』의 주인공인 마카르 데부시킨의 인물 분석과 편지 형식 분석에서 출발하였다. 이 소설은 47살 가량의 데부시킨과 18살 가량의 가난한 고아 아가씨인 바렌카가 주고받은 55통의 편지와 바렌카의 수기 1편으로 구성된 서간체 소설이다. 작가는 이 작품을 쓰고 있을 때 형 미하일에게 보낸 편지에서 작품의 독창성을 자랑스럽게 언급하였다. 작품 창작 배경을 살펴보면서 18세기 감상주의 문학의 서간체 소설 장르와 19세기 러시아 자연파의 인물 유형을 결합시킨 것이 독창성 중의 하나임을 알 수 있었다. 바렌카는 가난에서 벗어나기 위해 브이코프와 결혼을 선택하면서 시골로 떠난다. 하지만 데부시킨은 그녀에게 계속 편지 교환을 하자고 간청한다. 논문은 데부시킨이 왜 편지 쓰기를 포기할 수 없는지, 그 이유를 분석하였다. 논문의 첫 번째 분석 대상은 데부시킨이 편지를 쓰고자 하는 목적을 분석하는 것이었다. 작품에서 또 한 가지 흥미로운 부분은 데부시킨의 마지막 편지글인데, 그 편지에서는 다른 편지와는 다른 형식의 변화가 있었다. 9월 30일에 쓴 데부시킨의 마지막 편지글에서는 편지 쓴 날짜와 수신인의 이름과 발신인의 서명이 생략되었다. 이것은 작품의 다른 편지들과는 큰 차이점이다. 편지 형식 분석은 논문의 두 번째 분석 대상이었다. 텍스트 분석을 통해 데부시킨의 편지쓰기는 글쓰기를 위한 수단이며, 그가 편지쓰기를 계속 고집했던 것은 작가가 되고 싶은 열망이 있었기 때문이라는 것을 파악했다. 데부시킨의 마지막 편지글은 편지의 형식에서 일탈하였다. 이 일탈로 인하여 편지 쓰는 인물 데부시킨은 소설의 화자로 변하였다. 화자 데부시킨의 말로 소설이 종결됨으로써 그의 말은 바렌카에게 향하는 것이 아니라 독자에게 직접 향하게 되었고, 작품의 메시지는 더 큰 울림과 함께 독자에게 전달되었다.

영문 초록

This paper began with an analysis of the character and letter format of Makar Devushkin, the main character of Dostoevsky’s debut work, Poor Folk. This novel is an epistolary novel composed of 55 letters exchanged between Devushkin, about 47 years old, and Varenka, a poor orphan girl about 18 years old, and one of Varenka’s memoirs. The author proudly mentioned the originality of the work in a letter he sent to his brother Mikhail when he was writing it. Looking at the background of the work’s creation, it was found that one of its originality was the combination of the epistolary novel genre of 18th century sentimentalist literature and the character types of 19th century Russian ‘Natural School’. Varenka chooses to marry Vykov and leaves for the countryside to escape poverty. But Devushkin begs her to continue exchanging letters. The paper analyzes why Devushkin cannot give up writing letters. The first object of analysis in the paper was to analyze Devushkin’s purpose in writing the letter. Another interesting part of the work is Devushkin’s last letter, which has a change in format that is different from other letters. In Devushkin’s last letter written on September 30, the date of writing, the name of the recipient, and the signature of the sender were omitted. This is a big difference from the other letters in the work. Letter format analysis was the second analysis subject of the paper. Through text analysis, it was determined that Devushkin’s letter writing was a means of writing and that the reason he insisted on writing letters was because he had a desire to become a writer. Devushkin's last letter deviated from the format of a letter. Due to this deviation, Devushkin, the letter writer, turned into the novel's narrator. As the novel ends with the words of the narrator Devushkin, his words are directed not to Varenka but directly to the reader, and the message of the work is delivered to the reader with greater resonance.
